If you also make the array an array of zero elements, it will not show up.
This will require using a second array to actually disply the values, since
making the array zero elements long will erase it.  If you don't mind the
overhead of rebuilding the array from the source before next display, then
you could get away with one array.  A second array, however, should not
require that much memory unless it is really huge, and memory to memory copy
will always be faster than disk to memory.
