Hello...the necessity of my impending fatherhood for the first time compels me to find a more portable mac..and of course, right now I have not much to spare to purchase...I have an old but somewhat usable MacIIsi with eight megs of ram right now...just needto be able to use my PIMS, and do email and a bit of netting around...word processing, etc...what would be a comparable laptop unit? guess its an 030...faster would be nicer, but whatever...anyway, I may literaly only have one or two hundred dollars to spare for it...any suggestions? Please email your reply to me, I may not be able to check the newsgroups regularly...thanks! Don mailto:dms@efn.org Eugene Oregon Thanks for your help!

Any PowerBook numbered between 145 and 165 should be roughly equivalent to the IIsi; they all have 25-33MHz 030's, though their passive-matrix displays will make them feel sluggish at times compared to the IIsi. A powerbook 170 or 180 (with their active-matrix displays) would feel about the same as the IIsi. There may be better deals on higher models, but then you're starting to get into the $300+ range. I have a IIsi and a PB-165 and they make a nice combination with the 33 MHz PB being a bit faster. Any of the PB-1XX series Macs except the 100 should be comparable to a IIsi but you might want to get one that'll drive a regular monitor. Looking at the typical portable screen for hours can get tiring. You might also want to hang on to a regular keyboard. You can find the O30 powerbooks for $200 and under if you look, and a 170 just sold in Seattle for $75. If money is really tight, you can occasionally find the heavy original Portable for virtually nothing. With the backlite screen it isn't a bad machine though the power supply is too weak to run it with a near dead battery. --Mike Perry -- To avoid spam, all mail to BlkHole@ibm.net goes into a "black hole," never to be seen by mortal man.

1) If you want color, you will probably have to spend more one or two hundred. 2) If you don't want color, the Powerbook 165 is well regarded. It is fast, supports grayscale, and you can plug a desktop color monitor into it. 3) You might want to download GURU--a guide to every Mac ever made. I forget the URL, but it is put out by Newertech, and a search for terms like "GURA mac" should turn it up. 4) Mac Resource, http://www.mac-resource.com/ usually has good powerbook prices. -- EdibleLandscaping MaleLesbians SocialistCapitalism BurnTheFlag IsAbortionMoral?
