PSION Dacom Gold Card 56k problems

I'm using a PSION Dacom Gold Card 56k modem with a G3 233 Powerbook
and I find a lot of the time it connects and then complains
there is no carrier. It sounds like only one of the modems
(the remote one ?) is doing any handshaking but I couldn't
be sure. This is particularly irritating because
by the time it gives up I have paid for the call :-(.
I also get quite a few dropped connections.

The modem is sold in Australia for Macintosh with a seperate
instruction sheet on how to install it and some modem CCL
scripts on a floppy.

I get these problems with either OT/PPP or FreePPP 2.6.2.

At the moment I am going back to my 28800 card modem.
A modem that connects all the time and runs at half
the speed seems more useful!

Last thought - I have two of these, my wife also has one
so it isn't a problem with one particular card.

Thanks for any info.

Michael

PS Don't tell me its because I haven't got backside cache :-)

You aren't the only one experiencing problems with this particular card.
Our Principal has one of these (actually I think its the GSM compliant
model, one above yours) in his 1400 and its taken ages for us to get it
working correctly. The only thing we've narrowed it down to is that the
PSION drivers conflict with one of almost a dozen needed extensions from
Mac OS 8.1.

As soon as we got it working, we were told to cease and leave it be -
never did get to find out *exactly* what it conflicts with, and the
Principal is too busy to let us "tinker" with his 'baby'. He can do
everything he needs to do with it (except copy files *to* a Novell
server) so we've left him be for now.

Sorry I can't be of much more assistance than that.

I too have this problem at the moment. I've only had my Mac for three
days, so I'm struggling a bit to come up to speed, but from my ringing
around it seems that the Psion (I have the same card as you) is V.90 and
many Australian ISPs are not yet (I also live in Adelaide, and none here
are compliant to my knowledge). Big Pond is beta testing in Sydney and
Melbourne, but until it gets rolled out in Adelaide, I think you will have
to dial your ISP at a slower speed.

Regards
Mark

As far as I know, the Gold card is still not yet V.90 compliant, it should
be a K56 Flex at the moment. I have been checking the Psion website for a
V.90 updater in vain.

Could it be the wrong initialisation string? I am using FreePPP 2.6.2, and
it cannot detect an initialisation string using the auto-detect function.

Does anyone have a good initialisation string for this particular modem?
Then I can also set up the FAXstf software. Still not as instinctive as the
Global Village fax software, IMHO.
