Is there a known problem with this, or anyone else with similar problems? For some reason, the combo drive in my iBook Dual USB 500 (Toshiba SD-2002) has started refusing to acknowledge the presence of certain CDs, giving the little kick that happens when the drive is shut empty, then stopping. The drive can then be ejected as if it were empty. I've traced to problem to occur with discs that have clear plastic around the centre hub. Those that are painted around the centre hub are usually not a problem, although sometimes they do show the same problem, which is fixed temporarily by giving the combo drive lens a little wipe with a soft cloth. I hope I get time to take this machine back to Apple for a fix in the coming weeks, but I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this, or knows any fix other than going without the machine for several weeks. There is a "problem" with certain audio CD (new from sony and others) that have a copyprotection that causes hem to be impossible to be read in non-audio only drives. These have a thin reflective area near the outside edge and the nomal audio in the middle. Do a search for "copyprotection audio cd sony" if this sounds like the problem. Did the drive ever acknowledge the disks or have they always been unreadable?

No, this is with discs that used to be readable. Such as the disc that I burnt last week as the latest disc in my Retrospect backup set! Also applies to audio CDs, etc. Strangely enough, I just had no problem reading the Norton Systemworks CD which has a clear inside edge, but still having problems with other CDs.
