Lombard DVD Region Fix... Maybe

Hi All,

I think I have broken the region protection on my Lombard Powerbook. This
is how I did it.

1) Start up your Powerbook
2) While On, Remove the DVD Module
3) Get a DVD module from another Powerbook that has never been turned On
(Yes I am serious, this is what I did))
4) Play DVD's from diferent regions
5) Remove the module and put yours back in
6) Restart your powerbook
7) You should no longer be asked to switch regions

Ive tried this with my module in my powerbook with about 10 DVD's (Region
1 & 4) and it has not asked me once to switch regions.

Im not sure what has changed (I was dont this test to see if the
protection was written into software or back to a eeprom on the drive
itself) I did notice that the 'Apple CD/DVD Extension' and 'Region
manager' have been modified, but these files seam to get modified every
restart anyway. I have copied my extensions and prefs into an archive on
my ftp site (ftp://130.217.91.201) and I will leave these there for about
a week. I do NOT know if this will help anyone else, as it may have
written this info elseware, but I am interested to know if it does work,
so some feedback would be great.

Good Luck (It really does work (Well at least for me), but getting your
hands on a NEW Lombard DVD module is the hard bit)

Regards
Daniel

I could be wrong, but its possible Apple's DVD Player doesn't tell you
that its switching between regions after it warns you for the first time
when you do switch between regions.

I have what is supposed to be the Apple DVD Codefree region player from
the Apple developer site. I have no idea if it is though because I don't
have a DVD drive to test it on. If anyone wants (and if I uploaded the
file right) you should be able to get it at
http://www.cybcon.com/~dwilson/dvdcodefree.sit
Would someone please email me at djwilson@q-net.net.au and let me know
if this thing works.

Do you happen to have a URL for where it came from? (It's for a friend,
who'd be less paranoid about viruses if it were downloaded from an
official site.)

Thanks,

Tyler.

Tyler, I can guarantee you that there isn't a virus in the file. I run a
current copy of Virex at all times and so far no one else that has
gotten the file from my site has complained about finding any
infections. As far as I know the only "official" place to get the file
is from the apple developer servers. If your friend wishes to pay the
fee to become a developer and get his own log-in and password then he's
more than welcome to do so because I'm sure not giving out mine.

Maybe you can try visit here:
http://www.dfbills.com/powerbook/dvd.html

It has an application called DVDack, which it says it can reset the no of
changes made on PB DVD back to zero.
But I don't have DVDs other than region 1, I cannot test it though...
Anyone like to give it a try?

Yes.
The Apple DVD player 1.1 or higher allows you to change the region setting for
a maximun of five times.
For example:
You played an region 1 disc on your new DVD kit for the first time, the drive
will set itself as a "region 1 DVD player", it can then play all region 1
discs, but when you insert and try to play a disc OTHER THAN region 1, it will
warn you that you must change the drive's region settings, and you can change
it xxx times more...
If you choose change, you can choose between 6 different regions (set by DVD
forum), after you have set that, if you insert another disc that's different
from your CURRENT setting, you will have to change the setting again before
you can play it.

Such limitations are set by the DVD forum.

Hope such info helps.

P.S. BTW, did anyone comfirmed that the DVDack really works??

It "seems" to have worked. I switched between Region 1 and Region 4 disks
multiple times, but the odd thing is the Apple DVD Player didn't report it
was changing between regions. I changed between disks more than the 3
times I was left to change regions, so thats why it seems to have worked.

A PC owning friend of mine found quite a different "crack" for the the
DVD-ROM in the new G3s. Its a firmware patch, which directly updates the
firmware on the drive to ignore regions altogether, and according to the
page it works. The problem is, according to that page, is that you need
to install the DVD-ROM drive from your Mac into a PC, because the software
to update the firmware is only available on the PC. I'm going to try it
out one day, when I've got the time to tinker round with it. The page is
located at: www2.datatestlab.com/regionhacks

I couldn't get the software to even run on my G3 but as I've already
stated I don't have a DVD drive yet.

The software seems to be for a G3 Powerbook, ...
also, if you do not have a DVD drive, then you do not have the DVD card
installed in the Personality Slot (??). Apparently Apple won't sell DVD
solutions separately, so you may find it difficult to obtain DVD without
having to buy a whole new PowerMac G3 with DVD.

Doesn't make sense, does it?

As I have previously stated, Software DVD makes a lot of sense, and I
wonder when Apple is going to build Software DVD right into QuickTime, so
that we wouldn't have to worry about hardware decoding..

ATI Tech says that they won't even consider writing a DVD Player for their
card until Apple writes Software DVD into QuickTime..

Just to let you know, i have a wallstreet powerbook, bought in sydney that
has a DVD drive, that will play all regions.

there are two hacks that i have found.

1. DVD Player CodeFree. - this works a treat though as its a developer
version of version 1.0 it will not access us discs that have the FBI codes
at the start.

2. DVDack. Seems to work fine.

I cannot offer to distribute these from this list as i would be haulled over
the coals. but they are out there.

i just wanted to let you dvd'ers know that the holy grail does exsist.
