How does one network a pc with a NeXT? There are two desired levels: (1), where you can use ftp and telnet from the pc to the NeXT, and (2), where you can use the NeXT as some kind of file server. In both cases, i would like to use ethernet instead of a serial port. What kind of software and hardware is necessary on the pc for (1)? I suppose that on the NeXT end one only has to connect the ethernet cable--- is that right? How is (2) done? Thanks for any info. dan

I use FTP Software's PC/TCP on the PC with a 3c503 ethernet card. I can: - Telnet/FTP to the NeXT - Backup the PC to the NeXT's optical using PC/TCP's rexec/tar - Mount next disks using PC/TCP's NFS. The mounts just show up as additional DOS disks. Note that NFS is alot slower than a local disk, even over ethernet. Paul Verket (NeXTmail ok)

I can: I use this exact same setup, too. But if you are really cheap and only want to do (1) - get a cheap ethernet card like the 3c503 (you might want to get a 16-bit ethernet card for your PC like a Western Digital Elite 16 for better performance) and ftp the software from ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu. Anything in the NCSA_Telnet directory will work for you, I like the Clarkson (CUTCP2.2N) package myself. (FTP's PC/TCP is somewhat expensive, although your campus might have a site license like ours does, making it quite cheap) -- David Lemson (217) 244-1205 University of Illinois NeXT Campus Consultant / CCSO NeXT Lab System Admin Internet : lemson@uiuc.edu UUCP :...!uiucuxc!uiucux1!lemson NeXTMail accepted BITNET : LEMSON@UIUCVMD
