NextStep 3.0 on 8M/105+105 system?

Hoping this isn't something that's been discussed before.

I have an 8M/105 25MHz '040 system, with another external 105M drive,
running 2.1. Needless to say, it's a bit slow, but I'm a patient
person. I'm running Louis Mamakos' SLIP on it.

I'm looking into putting 3.0 on it. It's not likely I'll be able to
get more memory or more disk space in the near term. So what I'm
wondering is this:

(1) Is it physically possible to cram a reasonable minimal 3.0 system
onto two separate 105M drives? If so, would I be able to do it with the
Installer, or would I have to do the install on a larger filesystem
and copy bits and pieces by hand?

(2) I realize that 3.0 is going to run slower than 2.0, especially on
an 8M system. But is it going to be so outrageous as not to make any
sense? (I typically don't have more than a couple apps, plus the
Workspace, open at once.)

Thanks.

I am running 3.0 on an 8/250 system. It is a bit slower than 2.1, but the
improvement in functionality justifies it. It is possible to build a
minimal 3.0 system on a 105 drive.

On that note, we use NeXT's NfsExtend script for making the extended 2.1
release available to the 105 and 200 mb machines on our network.

[For those not familiar with it, NfsExtend simply adds a NFS mount of the
server's root directory to the client's NetInfo database and then makes a
zillion symbolic links to all the missing files.
E.g., "ln -s /NeXTMount/bin/cc /bin/cc" and so on.]

Hopefully NeXT has an updated version of this script ready to distribute.
It shouldn't be very different, but I'm sure several things have been
added,
deleted, or moved. Does anyone know if NeXT is going to have a 3.0
version
of NfsExtend? Maybe it's even on the CD.

I installed 3.0 PR2 on a 105 NeXTstation just to see what would happen.
It worked with no problem at all. What am I missing. Just about
everything :)

No man pages, no /NextLibrary/Documentation folder, certainly no developer
examples, no Oxford Quotations and only the English language files were
installed. And yes, Digital Webster's tiffs were missing too :-(

However, to my suprize, I did get Draw, BoinkOut (now a demo file), 3View,
Sound and Keyboard in a /NextDeveloper/Demos folder.

Another intesting note: Normally there are numerous printer drivers
loaded, however, on my 105 istallation ony the following were installed:

NeXT 400 dpi
NeXT 400 dpi level II
NeXT color printer
NeXT Generic Color
Apple LaserWriter NTX
Apple LaserWriter Plus
Epson 510
IBM ProPrinter 24
Linotronic 300

Also, all of the normal fonts are there: Symbol, Times, Helvetica,
Courier, Ohlfs and Lexi.

Using BuildDisk, you can install the missing pieces from CD-ROM when you
get more disk space.

BTW: only 17.2 MB free when the installation was finished, and there are
no user accounts except _Me_.

PS. Don't worry, I've got a 600 MB external drive too. I just installed
NS 3.0 on the internal 105 to see what would happen...
