Craig,

Zilog has a newer pin-compaible version of the Z8530 called (I think) Z85230.
This chip has a FIFO and can suposedly run up to 1.25 MBit/s in async mode.
In fact I just ordered one such chip yesterday (as well as a databook) to
replace one of the chips in my 3/60.

To benefit from the FIFO I presume that the driver will have to be hacked. 

My motive for the change is to run PPP or SLIP at an interesting speed over
the serial port.

I would appreciate to hear experiences other may have had in geting the
Z85230 work with FIFO in a 3/60 or similar machine.
