The 8530 was invented by Zilog way back in the days when the
Z-80 was the most advanced microprocessor. The new versions that
have FIFO's are numbered 85130 and 85230 and are also made by
Zilog. The question of whether they will work in a Sun 3 and
provide any improvement is very difficult. The 8530 is noted
for its difficulty in programming. Sun workstations are noted
for their difficulty in programming at a low level due to the
lack of detailed technical documentation from Sun.
So these chips could be used, but is there anybody who knows
enough to do the job of programming, patching and testing on
the poor old Sun 3?
