[I've included comp.sys.sgi and comp.graphics in this followup and have directed other followups to comp.graphics as this has nothing to do with PEX anymore] In article <ortnla8@fido.asd.sgi.com> akin@sgi.com (Allen Akin) writes: >If I had to guess, I'd say that SGI hasn't pursued the PLB because it >hasn't made a difference to sales. If PLB numbers were prerequisites >for some significant number of purchase orders, the company would work >on them more aggressively. > >This is strictly my uninformed opinion, not an official position of SGI. Richard Grossen, the local SGI sales rep, told me that SGI does "very well" on the PLB and promised to send me the results of the PLB benchmarks since he didn't have them at the demo he was doing for a local visualization symposium at the University of Utah. It's been a year and a half and I still haven't seen the numbers. I would think that any marketing department worth its salt would be screaming about the numbers loud and clear if they performed "very well" on their products. SGI is very eager to publish its SPECmarks for the processors on its machines. The SPEC benchmark suite is similar to the PLB benchmark suite in conception. The only conclusion I can draw from this is that SGI must not perform very well on the benchmark and doesn't want to publish "bad" numbers. -- Rich -- Repeal the personal income tax; vote Libertarian in 1992.
