UGGS GENERAL ASSEMBLY MEETING
April 1, 1998
UMC 157A
Minutes
1. Espinoza, Kosanovich, Benn
Students running for UCSU addressed the assembly, telling them why they
felt they should be elected. Issues such as housing, financial
aid/scholarships, the student union, university services consolidated into
one central location, getting the athletic fee to a student vote in order
to have a choice, and funding from administration for student services
were brought up. They passed out platform sheets with phone numbers and
e-mail addresses.
2. Commencement
The decision to change commencement (stop hooding PhD grads) was discussed
by Jennifer. The decision had come about due to the fact that many
parents of undergrads complained about the impersonal graduation ceremony.
Most schools w/in the university have their own ceremonies anyway, and
will continue to recognize students in this way. Arts and Sciences,
however, is too big for this. For smaller departments, there may be only
one or two grads recognized. Therefore, small departments will be grouped
together, and the A&S departments have a list of which departments will be
recognized together--the list should be published in the Colorado Daily
this week. This is going to affect the next two May ceremonies. For the
August/December ceremonies, it will remain the same as it has been in the
past. UGGS will follow through and get feedback from students in order to
give feedback to the university regarding student satisfaction.
Why wasn't student input sought before this decision was made? UGGS has
looked into setting up a regularly scheduled meeting with the office of
Peter Spear, the Dean of Arts and Sciences, in order that this will not
happen again. This year there will be the formal commencement where
degrees will be conferred onto departments, honorary degrees conferred,
etc. The Grad School is having a recognition luncheon on May 15, with
Dean Lynch, where the actual diploma will be picked up. The formal
schedule will be published soon in the Colorado Daily, as well as being
mailed to all graduates. Jennifer will forward the electronic copies of
the info she has and will forward it to the e-mail list for dissemination
to departments.
3. Graduate and Professional Student Appreciation Week
The Governor's office has made an official proclamation stating that the
week of April 5-11 is Graduate and Professional Student Appreciation Week.
There will be a reception next Wednesday, April 8 from 5-7 in the Sibell
Wolle Art Gallery.
Look for our ad in the Colorado Daily. Hopefully Dean Lynch will be in
attendance. There will be food, socializing, raffle prizes, etc. Has
anyone had any success in finding door prizes? We usually do massage
certificates, bookstore certificates, dinners.
4. Service Award Nominations
Every spring an award is are given out to a person who has contributed
significantly to UGGS. The award will be given out at the Graduate School
Award Ceremony on May 5 from 4-6pm.
Brian King and Tim Benner were nominated.
Brian and Tim will draw up lists of what they've done for UGGS and NAGPS
and will send them around via e-mail. Votes will be taken at the next
meeting.
5. TA workload committee
This committee was organized to develop a survey regarding TA workload in
different departments. There seems to be a discrepancy between
departments about the workload of TA's being paid the same amount of
money.
6. Funding
The total amount available equals $2,435. Up to 25% of our annual budget
can be given out in any given year. Total amount requested is $5,380.
Recommended amount total is $2,305. We would like to fund everyone, but
we don't have the money for it. There were 19 reps/officers present at
the start of the meeting.
BALSA
Requested $750 to send two students to the Natl. Black Law Students 30th
Annual Convention. The recommendation was to not fund any of the $750 due
to the fact that their report from the last event funded was not turned in
until a year later, as opposed to the two weeks which it is supposed to
be. Also, this is an off-campus event.
Argument: There have been so many discussions regarding the lack of
minority students on campus, this would be a good way to attract qualified
minority students to CU.
Vote yea for BALSA requested amount of $750: 0
Vote yea for suggested amount of $200: 2
Vote yea to not fund: 17
No funding was granted.
EAGA
EAGA requested $630 to help pay for the graduate student conference:
"Taboos past and present." It will be open to the CU community and
general public. The UGGS committee recommended funding the full
amount of $630. Many grad students from around the country will be
invited to the campus. Please insure that the event is publicized to the
UGGS officers for distribution to the rep list prior to the event. EAGA
has already received funding from the Cultural Events Board.
Vote yea for requested/recommended amount of $630: 19
Vote yea to not fund: 0
Funding was granted in the amount of $630.
Women's Law Caucus
The Women's Law Caucus requested $400 to help sponsor their "Women In Law
Day."
UGGS is unable to fund the full amount due to the fact that food and
honorariums cannot be paid for with this money. The WLC representative
informed the assembly that their need has changed from $400 to $205,
anyway.
Vote yea for requested amount of $205: 19
Vote yea to not fund: 0
Funding was granted in the amount of $205.
Federalist Society
The Federalist Society requested $600 to send two students to the 17th
Natl. Symposium on Law and Public Policy. The request of $600 for lodging
and airfare for an off-campus event was not recommended due to the fact
that the necessary forms for travel were not filled out. A rep from the
Federalist Society stated that the forms were filled out prior to the
funding deadline. All groups were contacted personally to inform them of
the committee recommendations in advance. If the form did not come to
UGGS, then they are ineligible for funding.
Argument: The National Federalist Society provides funding for speakers
who come on to campus. Therefore, they won't need funding in the future.
In three or four years, when the group has a symposium on campus, they
won't need funding. The problem is that that type of event is the sort of
thing that UGGS prefers to fund as opposed to an off-campus event.
Because the travel tips were missing from the proposal, the committee
cannot approve money for the proposal. Because the issue has been a fact
for two weeks, this argument should not even be in effect.
Vote yea to overturn the guidelines by a 2/3 vote: 2
Vote nay to overturn the guidelines by a 2/3 vote: 17
Therefore, there was no vote.
Vendemiaire
Vendemiaire requested $750 to help fund the colloquium on "Relationship of
Image and Text."
The UGGS committee recommended funding in the amount of $450 to cover
administrative costs and facility rental. Last years report was also late
getting back to UGGS, and there was not a clear budget accompanying the
application.
Vote yea for requested amount of $750: 0
Vote yea for suggested amount of $600: 4
Vote yea for recommended amount of $450: 13
Vote yea to not fund: 1
Funding was granted in the amount of $450.
MCD Bio
MCDB requested $750 for their Grad Student Symposium: The Molecular
Mechanisms of Cellular Motility. The committee recommended funding $500.
A proposed amount of $650 was made.
Vote yea for requested amount of $750: 0
Vote yea for suggested amount of $650: 3
Vote yea for recommended amount of $500: 16
Vote yea to not fund: 0
Funding was granted in the amount of $500.
National Lawyers Guild
The National Lawyers Guild requested $750 to help defray the airfare costs
of sending three students to Guatemala for a workshop on International
Human Rights. The committee recommended funding in the amount of $500,
contingent upon a full itemized budget by the assembly meeting and an
agreement that one person will deliver a ten minute report on the workshop
at the next assembly meeting on April 15.
The budget was provided at the meeting, as per the committee request. It
turned out that the request for money would be less than what was
originally thought. The students will be glad to provide a summary.
Presently, there are no Human Rights classes at the Law School. These
students will bring back info to get this program started here at CU.
Vote yea for requested amount of $750: 0
Vote yea for recommended amount of $500: 12
Vote yea to not fund: 4
Funding was granted in the amount of $500.
GSBA
The GSBA requested $750 to help defray the costs of the annual Barney
Ford Scholarship Silent Auction. It was not clear what the money was to
be used for. The budget only added up to $385, and it took a year to
receive the last budget from the business school.
They recently received $500 from Ron Stumps office. Last year $7,000 was
raised. The $500 will go to printing costs. Suggested amount of $150 was
made. Money goes to offset the cost so that more money can go to the
scholarship fund.
Vote yea for suggested amount of $150: 10
Vote yea to not fund: 4
Funding was granted in the amount of $150.
Meeting was adjourned at 7:45pm.
