Did you read the letter to the editor in the Washington Post on 2-7-99 (I
think) which was from a self-appointed traffic cop who loves to park his
fat ass in the left lane at 55mph??

Oh hell, I will just cut and paste it... I wish Mr. Semeniuk had a
publically listed phone number so you could call him to chat about his
extreme arrogance...

I read with interest "Left-Lane Slowpokes a Major Irritant" [Metro,
Feb. 2]. I am a European. I have lived in the United States for three
years, and I am amazed by the lack of lane discipline and the proper
   use of signals here.

In most European countries, it is illegal to stay in the left lane
unless passing. It is also illegal to pass on the right. No one gets
annoyed when a faster car comes racing up from behind flashing its
lights or using its horn; we simply get out of the way.

We also use our turn signals. Drivers here often signal as they turn,
using their indicators almost as an afterthought. However, this
behavior may be caused by the fact that if one does indicate, the
driver in the lane you are trying to move into will close the gap to
   prevent you from entering.

Finally, my impression is that there are fewer accidents on the fast
European roads than the equivalent roads here. I believe that this is
due to the fact that American drivers do not take sufficient driving
lessons and it is too easy to pass the road test.

Most drivers in Europe do not obtain a license until they are about 22
years old, mainly because of the expense of lessons and difficulty of
the road test. An average of 30 hours of lessons is usually required
   to pass.

If my fellow Virginians want to drive faster than 55 mph, they should
throw out the politicians who set the admittedly too-low speed limit
and change the law. Until then, however, the speed limit applies to
   all lanes.

"Limit" means "not to exceed"; if one "passes" a vehicle going 55, the
passer is a criminal. Thus I feel no compunction to alter my
legitimate use of the road to accommodate lawbreakers.

Traffic flow is not made dangerous by the adherents of the speed
limit. If everyone would obey the law, traffic would flow just fine at
   the appointed speed.

When it comes to obeying the speed limit, there are no slowpokes and
passers -- only law-abiding citizens and criminals.
