To cover the RH-passing case, you'd need : > signs saying something like "Pass only on left". : How about: : "DRIVE RIGHT, PASS LEFT : It's more than just a good idea, it's the law" Which state? And which law? And where does it specifically exclude traffic from passing on the right when the left lane is blocked by an irridentist left-lane hog who doesn't care that he's breaking the "keep right" law? I personally am a big fan of good lane discipline, but the sad fact is that no one has yet been able to point to a specific state law that bans passing in a through-lane to the right of slower traffic. Most states have general provisions against passing on the right, but when you examine them in detail, you discover that they're intended to prevent people from driving on the shoulder, etc., and that freeways (and often other roads with multiple lanes in each direction) are specifically exempted from the prohibition. This is the greatest difference between lane discipline laws in Europe and the US, IMHO. In Europe, both the passEE and the passER are in violation of the law in a right-hand-passing situation. In the US, the passEE is generally in violation of the state's "keep right" law, but since enforcement of this law is usually quite rare, we are consequently cursed with an abundance of left-lane hogs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bob Goudreau Data General Corporation goudreau@dg-rtp.dg.com 62 Alexander Drive +1 919 248 6231 Research Triangle Park, NC 27709, USA
