I've been connecting with an iBook recently- it's the marmalade colour, latest version, sys 9.0.4, using Remote Access. I'm using the Apple Internal modem. Connections to both Red and Purple are consistently 46k or 45k. Not too bad (although a Courier on the self-same line gets 52k). So much for the Ascend NASs. Trying Green gets me 33600; clearly, the Apple Internal won't talk to the 3Com NASs at V90 and falls back to V34+. The Courier gets 54k in this case. Apart from the obvious conclusion (don't give up the Courier); is anybody else here using the Apple Internal modem to call Green, and what speeds are you getting? Presumably iMacs should behave the same way- they use the same modem. So do they? I always use Red anyway, as from here it's the most consistently reliable ROMP with the fastest data throughput, so this isn't a crucial question. But I am curious... Calling from 020 8255 xxxx, Telewest. -- Peter

I used to use Green until I got HH/ISDN because it always reported faster initial connect speeds than Red or Purple. Green prefers scripted login so I now use Red with HH. Just tried Green with the internal modem and ARA reported connected at 49333. This is using the ISDN TA pots port. I used to get around 46k to Green and 42K to Red before HH was installed. -- Steve

This over Cable & Wireless from Leeds. Oddly, over the office phone system (Torch, but a dodgy switchboard between my desk and them) I can only get 33k to any ROMP. I keep separate Location Manager setups for each of Red, Green and Purple, with and without '9,' prefix, and flip between them. Most of the time I stick with Green, though, for no particuarly rational reason. -- Jonathan Sanderson <http://www.quern.demon.co.uk/jonathan> 'If I had more time, I would have written you a shorter letter' (Pascal)

Not sure which one it is but I get regular 46k connections to the '0845 212 1666' number. That's Purple. It's an Ascend ROMP, and you get the same rate as I do. The mytery here is why it's only 33600, V34+ to Green, which is the 3Comm ROMP, on 212 0666. It's not the line because my Courier gets 54k into the same wall plug. So it has to be the Apple Internal... I wonder if fiddling with the init string will help..? -- Peter

Using the Apple Internal Modem 56k script, the init string seems to do nothing much other than confirm default settings. Fine if you are using sending Faxes as well, which I'm not. I've extended the experience base a little. I compared the connect rates of the Internal modem and a Courier, to the same numbers, using the same phone plug (with a splitter). It goes like this: Network Access Server Courier Internal modem Demon Red (Ascend) 50666 or 52000 49333 Demon Green (3Comm) 54666 33600*** Freeserve (Cisco) 50666 48000 ***What the hell is this? Apart from being V34 and bloody slow? The other rates are V90, so it's not that the internal is connecting with K56Flex (which the 3Comms don't support) or anything like that. Somebody reported they were getting good connects to Green; so am I, with the Courier... Steve? Jonathan? Which modem script are you using? The only difference is that the Courier is being driven via FreePPP while the internal uses Remote Access; this should make no difference, as all I'm measuring are reported connect rates before the internet protocols are applied. So; has any Apple modem maven got any bright ideas? Beyond the bleeding obvious as in "You get what you pay for" and "Don't get rid of the Courier"? By the way, I can confirm that Green "prefers" scripted logons; in fact direct logons from the Courier to Green *always* fail first time, or after a restart, but work okay second time. Odd behaviour. From the iBook, first time logons are reliable; they're just pointlessly slow. There may be a connection... Anyway, as I shall never use Green from the iBook (having Red and Purple to play with) this is academic. But I am curious. -- Peter
