Brief post-migration follow-up: from my non-Demon IP, I can use
plain-text POP3 to port 110 and get at the messages, so (unless this is
a temporary ability or Demon subsequently decide to remove it) I can
retrieve messages from the new mail.demon.co.uk server with my
POP3-enabled version of GremNOS. Phew!

I'm not quite sure whether the same is true from a Demon IP address,
since Colin is still unable to get plain-text POP3 to work, but I'm
hoping that turns out to be finger trouble; I can't imagine even Demon,
with their legendary ability to get things wrong, insisting on encrypted
POP3 session from within Demon but not from without. Of course, ICBW.

However, I discovered that my GremNOS code was unable to pick out the
MAIL FROM address from the Return-Path: header field, because (shock!
horror!) the Return-Path: field created by the oh-so-wonderful new
platform is non-compliant with the RFCs defining the SMTP message
format. Why am I not surprised? So I'll have to fix my code to work
around the broken new platform before it's ready for release; sorry
about that!

(If you want to know, all of the SMTP message format RFCs -- 822, 2822
and 5322, which is the latest one -- require the Return-Path: field to
have an address enclosed in angle brackets; but the new platform doesn't
include the brackets. Good old MS!)

So, tentatively for now, there does appear to be Life After Migration.
