This is only a suggestion and probably a total waste of time but the good
ole battery for your control panels, clock etc may cause a problem.  I've
only got exp[erience of it happening on LC475 and Quadra 660 at about 3
years old but it results in the equivalent of a full blown system
failure.  Not a sad Mac or smiley Mac in sight.

I guess you tried booting from the emergency disk or CD?
