Hmm; why do I get this terrific sense of deja vu? ;-)

I presume you mean it would be nice to avoid such <ahem> infelicities, as
the Moto 3400 and the Sportster V.34bis implementations; ISTR that there
was much opprobium heaped upon Ascend (and hence upon Demon) which even
the later somewhat subdued release by USR of the Sportster fix[1] did
little to allay[2].

[1] I cannot remember whether Motorola ever had the decency to fix their
flawed implementation of V.34bis, or whether they decided it wasn't worth
making modems for some other reason :-)

[2] ISTR that IBM let slip the fact that USR had totally misinterpreted
at least FOUR different aspects of the V.34bis specification, which
accounted for their being incapale of interworking properly with accurate
implementations.
