Much of autoconf's work involves finding routines that are missing on the host machine. It would seem to me that if the standard ones were included in libiberty.a (as many are) and autoconf checked for its presence when deciding which functions were missing, many packages could compile more easily on more machines. It just seems to me that since I DO in fact have, say, vprintf hanging around in libiberty.a, GNU programs should know to use it. I'm not saying that this should exclude the workarounds (ever looked at error.c?), but should be an available option. Thoughts? -- Jason Merrill jason@jarthur.claremont.edu This is a self-referential .sig which is not particularly interesting.
