FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE NORTH HOLLYWOOD COMMUNITY TO CELEBRATE GRAND RE-OPENING OF HISTORIC EATERY After decades in North Hollywood and months of being closed for business, the oldest diner in California is reopening it's doors. Following restoration efforts under the direction of Casey Hallenbeck, a motion picture set decorator and owner of the nearby, turn of the century motif, Hallenbeck's General Store, Phil's Diner (11138 Chandler Blvd.) is serving once again. Hallenbeck and his partner, local restaurateur Ned Forman (of Ned's On Magnolia in the NoHo Arts District), will be staging a festive block party outside Phil's in order to celebrate the return of the famous landmark. On Saturday, September 27, 1997, beginning at 11:00 a.m., Chandler Blvd. between Lankershim Blvd. & Vineland Ave. will be closed. Inside Phil's, customers will be able to sample its traditional diner menu at 1950's prices, while outside they will be able to view classic automobiles, an antique fair and entertainment featuring local wild west-cowboy band, Outlaw Black. The celebration will continue until 6:00 p.m. Among those participating in the event include local businesses such as Junkies Antiques & Collectibles, Golden West Pipe & Supply and Deluxe Catering, sponsors of the event. Additional assistance for the event has been provided by City Councilman John Ferraro, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the North Hollywood Community Forum and the Universal City-North Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. Admission for the car show, antique fair and entertainment is free. -30- North Hollywood On The Internet http://www.primenet.com/~mhigby/noho.htm = = = = = = = = The Return of Phil's Diner http://www.primenet.com/~mhigby/nohomem.htm = = = = = = = = Don't send me spam (I'll bill you.) Basically the latter. They took the old building, restored (and cleaned it!) after years of neglect. Because its not the same staff (the olds one retired and gave up their lease) it is somewhat different. But I understand the current menu is closer to the old days than what they were serving last year when it closed down. And definitely not the same grease or bugs. :> North Hollywood On The Internet http://www.primenet.com/~mhigby/noho.htm = = = = = = = = The Return of Phil's Diner http://www.primenet.com/~mhigby/nohomem.htm = = = = = = = = Don't send me spam (I'll bill you.) The previous owners weren't THAT OLD, but the new ones are quite a bit younger than them. Never heard any stories about spilling or stumbling, but one customer reports the following: As he was sitting at the counter eating, the cook was flipping burgers at the grill. Suddenly, a cockroach ambled across the counter, the cook turned around and smacked the bug with his large spatula. The cook immediately returned to flipping burgers with his spatula. Rest assured the new cooks do not do this, nor are there any bugs there left since the janitorial service has become much more frequent than in the old days. :> North Hollywood On The Internet http://www.primenet.com/~mhigby/noho.htm = = = = = = = = The Return of Phil's Diner http://www.primenet.com/~mhigby/nohomem.htm = = = = = = = = Don't send me spam (I'll bill you.) Are you sure this customer isn't confusing reality with TV? The story could be aprocryphal, perhaps it's as you suggested: the storyteller saw the scene on television and thought it happened himself. Or, its even possible that the person who wrote that episode of Hill Street Blues may have even seen the same event himself at the old diner and wrote it into the show. Its possible - Phil's is about three minutes away from where lots of showbiz folks live. In any case, even if it didn't happen that way, most of the old time patrons would believe it was true. >David Braun braunink@hooked.net >David Braun Photography >Specializing in groups of all sizes--Conferences/Special Events, >Corporate/Industrial, Editorial, P.
