I've installed RedHat5.0. I need to get Linux to recognize me net card. From what I've read, the best way to do this is to recompile the kernel. Also from what I've read, this would involve a <make config>. Make isn't currently installed. I did a <rmp -i make*> from my RedHat Source CD. I then attempted a rpm -bc of the "specfile", but it ended with the following: "Checking for gcc... no" "Checking for cc... no" "Configure: error: no acceptable cc found in $PATH" "Bad exit status" I then did a find for both cc and gcc, but neither is found. I'm assuming I don't have a compiler installed? What steps do I need to take in order to: 1. Install a compiler 2. Install make 3. Recompile the kernel 4. Install my NE2000 compatible net card Thanks for any help! -----------== Posted via Deja News, The Discussion Network ==---------- http://www.dejanews.com/ Search, Read, Discuss, or Start Your Own

Since you just installed, proably the easiest thing to do is reinstall from scratch & make sure you install the "C Development" and "Networked Workstation" packages from the RedHat install dialogs. The dialog should then probe for the card & ask for the IP addressing details. I did it a few times before I got it the way I wanted. IMHO installing packages (esp. major ones) is a pain in the arse. Since you are still "fresh", just do it again, paying close attention at the package selection screen..... Have Fun! there is a bug in some ne cards try insmod 8390 then insmod ne io=0x300 irq=9 suplementing 300 for whatever io the card has and 9 for the irq of the card... email me if this works and i will show u what lines to insert into the conf.modules file.. if it is a pci card you need to install a newer kernal regards Stephen Schwetz loveabum@bigfoot.com wrote in message <747mo3$8fh$1@nnrp1.dejanews.com>... >I've installed RedHat5.0. It's highly likely that you won't need to recompile your kernel, but can use modules instead. Here are some steps you could take (assuming your card is pnp). As root, issue the command: cp /etc/isapnp.conf /etc/isapnp.conf.bak (do this to make backups) pnpdump /etc/isapnp.conf Look for entries describing your card. Uncomment out the lines referring to IRQ and IOPORT and the line containing ACCT Y Then use netconf to configure your adapater with similar IRQ, IOPORT settings.
