Trouble upgrading to RH 6.1
#56

Hi,

I'm having some trouble upgrading my current RH5.2 box to RH6.1.
The environment:

PC with two hard disks, the first disk has two partitions, on the first
(hda to Linux) is installed NT, the
second partition is an FAT partition (hdb to Linux) which I used as a
file interchange mechanism.
The second disk (hdc) holds my current Linux RH5.2 installation.
	Booting is done with LILO.
I have the new boot and update disks from RH.

Upon booting from the boot disk, I enter: linux updates.
First question: in the instructions on the web site, it is said that the
'updates' disk will be asked for and that then the installation will
continue as normal. I am not asked for this 'updates' disk and after
booting, the loader loads the GUI stuff from CDROM (I have also tried it
with the text mode installation with the same results).
The procedure then identifies my keyboard and mouse and then I have the
option to do a full install or an upgrade.
After choosing 'upgrade", I get the following:

Error mounting ext2 filesystem on hda1: Invalid argument

When I hit the OK button, my system freezes with a dialog box saying:
'Searching for Red Hat Linux installations'.

Looking at the other screens I see the following:
Dialog screen:
	File "/usr/lib/python1.5/site-packages/todo.py" line 1130 in
upgradeFindRoot
	isys umount('/mnt/sysimage')
File "/usr/lib/python1.5/site-packages/isys.py" line 8 in umount
	return _isys.umount(what)
	System Error: (22, 'Invalid argument')

Systemlog screen:
Can't find an ext2 filesystem on dev ide0(3,1)

I suppose that the upgrade procedure is confused by the fact that my
current installation sits on the second disk?

Are there any parameters that I can pass to the boot command to solve
this?

TIA - Eric

This is a problem with the RedHat boot disk: it just doesn't want to recognize NT
filesystem on the first drive. I e-mailed to RedHat support about a month ago and
did
get a reply to try a new "update" image from there updates ftp cite. The latter
didn't
work either. After that I lost hope.

Welcome to the new economy of surging overloaded internet companies who have so
much money they even do not care about customers.

The only solution I see is to rebuild the boot disk ourselves. Maybe VA Linux
will stand up to this task since they are relatively new?

Something looks very wrong here. Your physical drives, not
partitions, use the hda, hdb, hdc designations. Partitions would be
hda1 hda5, hdb1 hdb5, etc. Unless hda or hdb is not a hard drive, hdc
could not be a hard drive. That would make three hard drives. -- d

Hello, is your CD-ROM your secondary (slave) device on IDE channel 1?
My old 'test' box was set up that way and my CD-ROM was /dev/hdb, the
other two HD's on the second IDE channel were /dev/hdc and /dev/hdd.

Hmm, I must have been really confused by this whole upgrade business...
In fact, my first disk is hda, which has 3 partitions, hda1 and hda2
both NTFS on which NT is installed and an FAT partition called hda3. My
second disk is indeed hdc. I just checked with fdisk, and I do not have
a hdb. Now that you mentioned this, I remember that after installing
RH5.2 a year ago, I was surprised that it had installed itself on hdc...

Cheers - Eric

Eric, actually, my cdrom drive is hdc. This leads me to think that
your hard drive is being seen as something other than a dos d: drive.
D: here to refer to an actual physical drive as opposed to a virtual drive.
Do you have your two drives as primary and slave on one cable? Or are
you using two different cables? I drive both hard drives off of one
ide cable. I know though that other configurations are possible. --

Well, my cdrom is hdb... Here is an extract of dmseg:
ide: i82371 PIIX (Triton) on PCI bus 0 function 57
    ide0: BM-DMA at 0xf000-0xf007
    ide1: BM-DMA at 0xf008-0xf00f
hda: ST36531A, 6204MB w/128kB Cache, CHS=790/255/63, UDMA
hdb: HITACHI CDR-8435, ATAPI CDROM drive
hdc: ST36531A, 6204MB w/128kB Cache, CHS=13446/15/63, UDMA
ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irq 14
ide1 at 0x170-0x177,0x376 on irq 15

I did not assemble the machine myself and I cannot open it at this
moment, but I will check for the cables.

Eric, I don't know whether it really matters. But I wouldn't be
surprised if your find your cdrom drive as a slave on your hda drive
cable. You could go into bios at startup and look, just for fun.
Like I said, I don't think it matters. Good luck -- d
