Thanks to all!
What I ended up doing is:
unuinstalled practically everything I couldn't live without - including
IE4.01, IE3, Office, SQL7, several others.
Reinstalled IE4.01 sp1, reinstalled SQL7, reinstalled other software.
Now it all works except Word tells me "the document could not be registered"
every time I open WOrd or try to open a new or existing Word document.
I click OK and it still works.
Now my SQL 7 works great!!!
