I've transitioned from engineering to medicine so I concur with your insights. Much of the world, however, doesn't know this so they think that a surgeon, by virtue of an MD degree plus a long residency and a subsequent high salary equals a person of greater intelligence than a scientist or engineer with equivalent levels of education and experience. I believe it also has to do with the MBA factor where MBAs have reduced the corporate power of engineers to that of lackeys than co-creators of intrinsic value. And when a profession is looked upon as corporate serfs, it's hard to hold much respect for its adherents in the mainstream mindset.
