There was a widely reported march in Washington today (Saturday) having to do with problems of cities, with some mayors in attendance, including the Mayor of New York. I was there, and I estimated the rally on the grounds of the Washington Monument to have a crowd of about 11,000, certainly no more than 15,000. Almost all who were there marched in along Constitution Avenue. To estimate the stationary rally crowd on the Monument grounds. I used a map to determine the areas having densities of 1, 5, 10 and 20 people per 100 square feet. To estimate the size of the march, I could be more direct: I counted the marchers as they went by, by visually breaking the crowd into chunks of about 25 and tallying those units. I was pleased that my two estimates agreed with each other. I imagine the Park Service will be quoted by the newspapers tomorrow as saying that there were between 50,000 and 100,000 people there. Or they might just say "tens of thousands"...
