The term Zionism was invented by Nathan Birnbaum 1890, in his journal " Selbst-
emanzipation " He defined the expression as:

   The establishment of an Organization of the national-politicall Zionist
party in juxtaposition to the practically oriented party that exist now.

 He wanted to create a political orientation toward the piece of land that 
today is Israel, rather than the philantropical approach taken before him
by such people as Baron de Rothschild.  The Baron had supported several jewish
settlements with funds in the 1880's. Birnbaum's Zionism had as its goal to 
resettle the jewish people in its old homeland and eventually create the 
jewish state.

  These goals ofcourse is largely fullfilled today. If you ask the question
- What is Zionism today ?  You will get enough answers to fill your mailbox
several times over.
