November 16, 2003 Southern Drawls Confuse La. Phone System By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) -- Southern drawls have thwarted voice recognition equipment used by the Shreveport Police Department to route non-emergency calls. A switchover to a lower-tech, touch-tone system -- in which callers hear a voice recording they can respond to by pressing a different number for each division -- is scheduled for Monday, said spokeswoman Kaycee Hargrave. The voice-recognition system asked people to name the person or department they wanted. More often than not, the system just didn't understand, and they wound up at the wrong place, said Capt. John Dunn, who oversees police communications. ``In Louisiana, we have a problem with Southern drawl and what I call lazy mouth. Because of that, the system often doesn't recognize what (callers) say,'' he said. Interim Chief Mike Campbell knows all too well how frustrating the voice recognition system can be. ``I can count on one hand when I have been transferred to where I've wanted to go, and I know the system. I can imagine how frustrating it would be for a citizen,'' he said.

So what's your point? I am sure spic "wuz up home" talk in East LA, "Mutha Fuckin" Nigger talk in Detroit and New York "Figgeit about it" Brooklyn talk is just as confusing as Southern dialect. If not more. uu wrote: > November 16, 2003 > Southern Drawls Confuse La. Phone System > By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS > > > SHREVEPORT, La. There are some systems that are almost flawless as long as the requested response is just a single word. It is, however, one of those things that you get what you pay for. If you go with the lowest price, you are bound to get the lowest usefulness.

My parents aren't from this country, and some of their family members who speak English with very heavy Japanese accents have no problems with certain voice recognition systems, including Discover card's and AT&T's. They also think that every American accent is easy to understand, compared to some Australian and British accents or even some Japanese accents in Japanese (one aunt who barely knows English said it was easier to follow the dialog of a samurai movie by reading the English subtitles than by listening to the actors -- they really do mumble like John Belushi).

i rented the movie Snatch after hearing from several folks that's it's pretty good... i gave up on it about 20 mins. into it because i couldn't understand enough of the dialogue to make sense of the film. I thought it was very strange to have that much trouble with it... i've always had to listen much more closely to that accent, but that movie just required too much work. > AT&T's. Some voice reco systems for tracking packages, getting stock quotes or accessing contact lists seem to work very well, even taking into account accents. I've seen a particular system work with Texans, Chinese, Mexicans, Afghanis and several other accents. In my experience, a well built (and tested) system based on Philips, Nuance or Speechworks speech recognizers should have worked, given a reasonable SNR (15db+). Does anyone know who the vendor was for the Shreveport system?
