Localisable resources?

Hey people,
I've asked this in a different way before and got no response, but I'm
still having some difficulties, so I thought I'd try again.
I'm part of a team developing a Palm application (Palm OS 5, to be
running on ARM, if it's important) using CodeWarrior for ARM Developer
Suite 1.2, and I need to make it localisable. From my point of view,
this means getting the resource file into a format ('text'-based) that
can be sent to a third party to translate and send back to me. This
resource file format needs to somehow support different character
encodings, so we can have one in each language.
Now I'm in a bit of trouble. I've got it working so far in English,
using the .RSRC format (which seems to be binary).
I also have some .rcp files from using the PilRC for the emulator, but
I'm not sure if I can get these working with CodeWarrior, and I'm also
not sure if .rcp files can be in any character encoding other than ISO
"Latin 1".
I have looked, and failed to find, any format description for the .xrd
resource files that I can create CodeWarrior projects for, but these are
also text-based, so if I could find a syntax description for them (i.e.
what tags/attributes are valid/available) then they might work too.
Can anyone advise me or point me to a text-based resource format, that
will work with our CodeWarrior for ADS1.2 project in place of our
current binary .RSRC file, and will also support multiple character
encodings?
Thanks in advance,
Donovan.

Neil Rhodes has created a PilRC plugin for Codewarrior that lets you use
.RCP text resource files - that bit is easy, however I'm not sure about
using it with CW ADS...??

You might also like to check the PilRC manual for your other questions:

I'd heard about this, but not tried it. Now I've tried it, and it doesn't seem to notice the dll there at all (i.e. the plug-in doesn't show up at all in the 'Compiler' drop-down list from the File Mappings dialog. Any ideas? Perhaps this plug-in just doesn't work with this version of CodeWarrior? > You might also like to check the PilRC manual for your other questions: > > http://www.ardiri.com/index.php?redir=palm&cat=pilrc&subcat=manual Yeah, I've got that stored locally too. It mentions international usage, but doesn't actually say how to use characters from non-latin character sets. Perhaps the .rcp file is able to be in 'Unicode' UTF-16, or UTF-8, but I don't know if I have to specify what encoding it is in, and if so, how. Also, I'm still after a format description for .xrd files. This would be the best solution, I think, but documentation on valid tags, attributes and other format-related stuff just doesn't seem to exist. Or at least, I can't find it.... Anyone? Thanks again, Donovan. (donovan.winch at picsel.com)

This is to make it compatible with CodeWarrior for Palm OS. Since its an open-source plugin, you could recompile it to match the OS and processor IDs' used by ARM's linker plugin to the CW IDE, but I don't know what those IDs are. > Also, I'm still after a format description for .xrd files. The XRD format is still proprietary to PalmSource... I do not think they've publicly released this format or their tools to support it, so to get any information on that, you need to talk directly to them or to the licensee you're working with. -- Ben Combee <bcombee@metrowerks.com> CodeWarrior for Palm OS technical lead Get help at http://palmoswerks.com/

I didn't even try to find out the IDs either, but thanks again for the idea. > The XRD format is still proprietary to PalmSource... Ah. Well that would explain that, too. Although it seems rather odd that the resource file format is proprietary; kinda makes it hard to write resources in it! ;) As it is, I've got a program from the licensee (not sure if it's a standard program available to anyone or not), that generates a .xrd from a .rsrc. So I can build the .rsrc in constructor, generate the .xrd in UTF-8, localise the strings contained in there and build the .prc in CodeWarrior using the relevant localised .xrd file for resources. It's a bit fiddly and long-winded, but seems to work. Thanks for the help, Ben & Gavin. Donovan. (donovan dot winch at picsel dot com)
