I was just passing by, and have little to contribute to the sum of human knowledge, except to tell a story... We retired to the Sierra Nevada (so the reason for sac.general) but lived all over the world, with the 1990s in Dallas, Texas. I sang (and still do) in a number of choirs, and go to listen to all that I can. The Turtle Creek Chorale is amongst the best, and we went to their Dallas Christmas concert. At the beginning, the chorus filed out, each with a poinsettia plant, and they were placed at the stage front, maybe 30-50 plants, I did not take any special notice, other than it was a classy way to dress a bare stage, and they were a classy act. They did (as always) an outstanding show (they have many recordings) and at the end of the show the announcer indicated the symbolism of the plants. Each plant represented a member of the choir that had died of AIDS. And, he said, this was the first year, in ten years, that they did not have anyone die of AIDS. The audience applauded quietly, with obvious mixed emotions. Some of the relatives of the dead were in the audience, so there could not be any real celebration. I never knew then, and I do not know now, how to react to something like that. There must be a reason, somewhere, somehow, that I do not know anything about. All I do know is that we are all human beings, and that we should try to help each other out, as best we can.
