More than 26,000 poor in California could lose housing help, group says.
By Andy Furillo -- Bee Staff Writer
Published 2:15 a.m. PDT Saturday, July 12, 2003
An estimated 184,000 people across the country face losing their federal
housing subsidies as a result of a budgeting miscalculation by the Bush
administration, according to a report released Friday in Washington by an
advocacy group for the poor. The reduction would be unprecedented in the
29-year history of the Section 8 housing subsidy program, said the report
by the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities.

"For many of these people, they won't be able to make ends meet," said Will
Fischer, a low-income housing policy analyst for the center and a co-author
of the report. "For the elderly and disabled folks who make up 40 percent
of the caseload, it means they won't be able to live independently. It
means they will have to move into an institutional setting or be at risk of
homelessness."

More than 26,000 Californians on Section 8 would lose their subsidies as a
result of the shortfall, according to the CBPP. No figures were available
for the Sacramento region.

Great. Free housing for drug addicts, migrant workers, and the nigra.

I take exception to your closing comments, sir. I am on Section 8
housing relief, as are 43 others in the apt complex in which I live. I am
disabled and elderly both, but I am not a drug addict, a migrant worker, or
a nigra. Neither is anyone else in this complex. I submit that those who fit
the first two categories you mention are not those who'll be affected by a
loss of these subsidies. I CANNOT work. I've tried, and it is impossible. I
can move around sufficiently that I am able to live independently, but there
is NO WAY I can afford to live without the HUD rent subsidy. What should I
do?

They should be working and earning and paying for their own housing.

If they are getting their housing and food paid for with money stolen
from people like me, they need killing.

From what I have seen, 4 million Californians need to be rounded up and
sent up the chimneys.

You are living on money stolen from me.

Pay it back, with interest, immediately, or go up the chimneys.

What do you mean by disabled? You are obviously capable
of sitting at a terminal and posting to usenet.

If you can do that, you can do data entry and possibly
work at a call center. Good honest work.

How old is elderly? obviously not too old to post.

no trouble cruising the net.

I note that with your HUD (Taxpayer's money - those with
jobs) subsidy, you can also afford the luxary of a net
connection.

Disabled -- I cannot talk or handwrite. I type fairly slowly using
only one hand. I've tried to work in my previous job as a computer repair
tech. But the talking required when training and in the workplace itself was
something of which I was incapable. I thought I could get by by typing my
questions, but for a variety of reasons, that was impossible too. I also
cannot walk. I am 100% wheelchair bound. I use a motorised 'chair since it
is impossible to manuver a manual chair with only one hand/arm. I am also 59
years old. I have the absolute minimum net connection (dial up, 56kbps)
using a system that was given me by a friend. I'll admit the essential
justice of your statement that I am living on (some of) your tax money.

People like you are who the system is designed for, as are most of those
that need to use the system. It is similar to hearing stories about "bad"
cops. It makes people think there is little else other than that, which is
not the case.

Again, it is people like you the system is designed for. No one likes
taxes, and I pay quite a bit, but this is what it is for. This I do not
mind at all.

Unfortunately, the sentiments expressed so far are pretty prevalent, and
it's not conservatives (compassionate or not) but vocal liberals who are
to blame.

Remember a few years back, when welfare-to-work reforms led SF (or was
it CA?) to create a program to train welfare recipients for work?
Welfare recipients were given basic clerical training, and taught how to
put together a resume, fill out an employment application, and go
through an interview. Remember that?

And what happened? Cranky liberals were soon complaining bitterly that
the program only (only!?!) prepared people for $9/hour jobs. They
declared the program a failure, and yet another example of this
country's war against the poor (hello?).

Do you think this endeared welfare recipients to the average citizen,
many of whom don't make what these welfare recipients were being
offered?

Let me give you another example: Prop N - Care Not Cash. While liberals
howl that Prop N won't replace the $360 the homeless get every month
with services of equivalent value, the citizenry at large can't get over
the fact that the city hands out $360 dollars a month to people whose
only qualification is that they don't have $360 dollars of their own.

Don't blame conservatives; it's liberals, with their entitlement
attitude and their generosity with other people's money, who are to
blame.

Jimbo--

If they'd kick out the bums, druggies, lazy, those who just refuse to work
but keep having kids, etc., then we could cut the amount of mony we are
spending (and thus taxes) and still help those who are in need due to no
fault of their own. Some of us are sick of paying for those who won't work
in order to assist a little those who are really unable. If only the
government hadn't put so many of the private charities out of business. Many
of us would give more to charities if the government didn't steal so much of
our hard-earned dollars for the undeserving (bums, druggies, those who
refuse to work, etc.; not seriously disabled and elderly).

Thank you and everyone else who posted messages of support. They
help. One thing, most of those receiving HUD housing assistance do pay taxes
(sales tax, use tax, and if they work, state and federal income tax). The
problem many see and complain about (a legitimate one) is that people (drug
addicts, alcoholics, and such) abuse the system to the point others can
complain. I submit these abusers are in a relative minority to those who
really need and can use this help. Walk down the street in S.F. Who stands
out? Of course it's the bag person pushing their shopping cart, or the
drunken bum peeing in a doorway, or panhandling in front of Walgreens. If
you are a doctor or work in a hospital, you'll prob see and note the welfare
mother, who has kids only so she can get a check fm the state before you'll
note the tens of thousands of 'regular' births. Do you see or make note of
the thousands who, like I, simply are not capable of providing decent
housing for themselves without this HUD rent subsidy? No. For the most part,
we just stay quiet and keep on keepin' on. "The squeaky wheel gets the
grease." Only in this case, 'the grease' is to remove the grease from ALL
the wheels.

	Again, thank you all.
