A WOMAN IN A HURRY ALLEGEDLY KILLED BICYCLIST Christina Jewett Sacramento Bee June 21, 2005 SACRAMENTO - A man who called 911 while having chest pains in a Wal-Mart parking lot also phoned his wife, setting her on a wild tear Sunday night that resulted in a fatal hit-and-run, according to authorities. "She was on a mission, she was not going to be stopped - a very bizarre story there," California Highway Patrol spokesman Max Hartley said. The trek began about 10 p.m. Sunday, Hartley said, when Nicole Meshell Patterson, 34, received the call from her husband. She didn't have a vehicle, so she took a van belonging to a neighboring day care center, rammed through a locked gate at Mission Avenue and sped onto El Camino Avenue, Hartley said. Witnesses said she failed to stop for the red light at Watt Avenue at 10:34 p.m. and struck an adult bicyclist, Hartley said. The victim, who had not been identified by Sacramento County coroner's officials as of Monday evening, died at 10:56 p.m. Hartley said Patterson then sped across a landscaped median into the Wal-Mart parking lot, saw her husband and then ran into the store. Patterson's husband turned her in later. She was arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, driving under the influence of alcohol with injury, felony hit-and-run and violation of parole. She was jailed on a no-bail hold.

She should have called 911 for her husband. The bicyclist should have had reflectors on, and headlight, and tail light, and should not have crossed in front of the moving car, in spite of what a green light says. A dead dumbass now.

Wow. A fat fuck has a coronary in the parking lot at Wal-Mart, and manages to kill a bicyclist in the process. And people say the sedentary American life is a victimless crime. ;-) CC

A dead dumbass now. Hmmm.... article states: "Witnesses said she failed to stop for the red light at Watt Avenue at 10:34 p.m. and struck an adult bicyclist, Hartley said." To which Jake "Albert Einstein" Donwawgo responded: "should not have crossed in front of the moving car, in spite of what a green light says." Well, from Jake "Albert Einstein" Donwawgo's "logic" one can conclude that the safest course of action for anyone and ANYTHING with the green light at an intersection is to simply sit there and DO NOTHING EVER because one can never be sure if there's gonna be a panic stricken individual ready to run the crossing red light "legitimately" because they have just cause based on an emergency. Well guess from now on I'll just sit at a green light in my car AND DO NOTHING cause goddamned if there might not be someone ready to run the crossing redlight cause he or she has a "legitimate" emergency they have to attend to.......

Wow! Not that is a stretch!! The bicyclist could have been a tractor/trailer, police car or mini van filled with people. The net result is it still sucks and the driver was waaaay wrong. It was not a targeted assassination--or the least (current) evidence says the cyclist was in the wrong spot at the wrong time. So too are many people with suicide bombers. Get the data, otherwise you are just another asshole with an opinion. Well - the cyclist learned their lesson - and paid with their life. Maybe if the driver could see the bicyclist at night, this may have been avoided. I have read of ambulances and police cars hitting bicyclists because the dumb ass bicyclist failed to yield to emergency lights, had no lights or reflectors at night. In the two instances I read, the emergency vehicle driver never saw the bike at night until it was too late. I am a long distance cyclist, and so is my brother - who is a Minneapolis city cop. He stops, tags and confiscates - if necessary bicyclists who blow stop signs... cut in and out of traffic.. blow crosswalks while little people are in them... etc. I say bravo. If we can't obey the laws how can we expect auto drivers to yield to a bicyclist...... Be an example to kids on how bicyclists behave on the road. Maybe you might save one of those kiddies someday by teaching them how to properly ride a bicycle or another bicyclist when those kids start driving motorcars, instead on those kids thinking bicyclists on fancy road bikes are assholes. If you are stupid enough to ride around at night without reflectors and/or lights on, you ride at your own peril. Nature has it's way of eliminating idiots. And who says people who have heart attacks are all "fat fucks"? Did you read the original article? I mean, the whole thing, including
the part where it listed what the driver got charged with? How, exactly,
is being visible at night going to stop you from being hit by a drunk
moron driving a stolen vehicle when she goes through a red light?
No matter how visible you are, you still won't be seen by somebody who
doesn't look.

I don't give people heart attacks by flying by with two inches to spare, I slow down, see that it is clear, and go through. If it isn't clear, I circle or (very rarely) stop. I am not driving a car, I am riding a bike. That means that lights aren't timed for me like they are for a car. I can't go 33 MPH. So I would have to stop every two or three blocks and wait. That would just about double my commuting time and make it impossible to do. I don't have that much time. You are a long distance cyclist, I am not. I go 12 miles each direction, twice a day. Through heavy traffic in Manhattan and down bike lanes in Queens. Sorry guy, I guess you and your cop brother don't bike in the big city. I do. If you stop and wait for lights in Manhattan, you are the only cyclist doing so.

You sound far more considerate in crossing than I see most riders here. Moreover, the sensors in the pavement (at least around here) don't trip for bicycles, so you're trapped until a car comes along going your way unless you want to get off your bike to push the button for the WALK sign. This is also an undue burden. -- Cheers, Bev +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ "Rats cry when they hear about my life." -- Dilbert

Yes - those guys/girls ride like maniacs sometimes. I have even seen them ride on the sidewalks dodging people. They are fast, but many times scary and rude.
