Parts, parts, parts... (Where?)

I'm newish to electronics projects, although I've had a lot of theory and done a
lot of breadboarding (and have experience PC boarding), and I'm looking for
parts and mounting suggestions for do-it-yourself sorts of projects.
Specifically, I want to put together a small amplifier to go between my
microphone and my Amiga's digitizer. I've heard about amps-on-a-chip, but I
have no experience with them at all. Has anyone worked with them or know where
and what kind to get? I'm trying to keep it simple... ...I also need something
to house this in, and I'm interested in where good places to buy components in
general are. If anyone has any information, please email me. Thanks!
