Implicit Surface Models (ISM)
-----------------------------
- commonly called blobby models (Blinn),
soft objects (Wyvill), and metaballs (Nishimura)
(Some might argue subtle differences but most don't;
they're pretty much used synonomously.)
(1) Good main reference for ISM
"An Introduction to to Implicit Surfaces", Jule Bloomenthal (Ed.),
Chandrajit Bajaj, Jim Blinn, Marie-Paule Cari-Gascuel, Alyn
Rockwood, and Brian Wyvill, Morgan Kaufmann Publishers Inc.,
San Francisco, CA, 1997. ISBN 1-55860-233-X
- good introduction with pointers to original research work,
details, and applications
- based Siggraph course notes from a recent Siggraph conference
(2) "The Implicit Site" - main web site for ISM
- (references, code, research, contacts)

(3) For a good but general intro, see the usual graphics references:
(This would be a good first step before (1) and (2)
