1995 SMPTE / USC SEMINAR
UNDERSTANDING THE USE OF COLOR IN FILM, VIDEO, AND COMPUTERS
Saturday, May 20, 1995
University of Southern California, School of Cinema-Television
Norris Cinema Theatre
Registration opens at 8:00am; Seminar starts at 9:00am
The penetration of digital technology into the capture and display of
moving images has added more potential confusion to a process that is
already little understood. Not only do image makers need to master
the film-video interface and the analog-digital video manipulation
process, digital techniques have all but replaced optical and
photochemical methods for film visual effects. And now multimedia
rears it head, so that film and video segments must be displayed with
fidelity on computer monitors as well.
Accurate color reproduction -- as viewers define it -- is at the top of
everyone's list of essential ingredients for entertainment product.
But what is "accurate," and how do we achieve the desired result when
film, video, and computers are so different -- even divergent -- in the
way they capture, manipulate, and display color?
PROGRAM:
I Fundamentals of Color Perception and Reproduction
Charles A. Poynton
II Capture, Processing, and Display of Color in Film
Glenn Kennel
III Origination and Display of Color in Video
Fred Van Roessel
IV Computer Representation and Exchange of Color Information Between Media
Charles A. Poynton
V Conclusion and Future Directions; Audience Q&A
