I've never heard of anything like this before.  It sounds like there
might be some serious legal issues involved.  Try reposting your
question to misc.legal.moderated  and ask the law oriented people who
respond to cross post to this group as their answers would certainly be
of interest to the many postdocs etc. who read sci.research.careers.
