Oh you silly man!  :-)  Since when must the value of everything be
measured in terms of number of jobs created?

A lot of the value of the space program is in technology spinoffs; you'd
be surprised at how much "everyday" technology nowadays was first
developed for the space program.  As examples, a lot of stuff in the
areas of micro-electronics and computers, medical telemetry,
communications, and the like were needed to put man on the moon, and
later became the basis for consumer goods.

There are also the intangibles, like having a goal to work towards, and
having something to be proud of afterwards.
