** Please send responses to chetter@leland.stanford.edu ** I have a cool 386/25 notebook with a fax modem. I travel lots. I am very keen on email. 1) Is there a list of phone numbers in the USA, Europe, Australia or the world where I could call up and get a telnet prompt? I'm sure the must be some other way for me to access my email account while travelling besides a long-distance call to Stanford. In Germany this would be particularly helpful. 2) Any tips from travelers about using a fax or modem abroad? If I set it on pulse, will it always work? Do all telephones use just two wires, and if I just rip apart my modular phone plug and jam the wires randomly into forign wall sockets will it work....or is there a better way?? Thank you if you can help. I can barely read news let alone anonymous ftp, so anything you SEND to me at chetter@leland.stanford.edu will be most appreciated...info or software or whatever.

dial (313)-577-0321 to connect to a 300-to-9600 bps modem. it connects you to the MERIT network. At the terminal prompt type in the terminal type (I use kermit with vt100). Then at the which-host prompt, type in `telnet <complete internet address>' TO get the MERIT dial-up access number in YOUR city in USA, type HELP instead of `telnet....'. Then follow instructions and choose options... I found information on how to access (atleast how to start going about this way) internet from India, using the HELP option. It gives information about ALL dial-up connections in ALL countries... BTW, dont use this number regularly. You could be trespassing detroiters property. Then at >the which-host prompt, type in `telnet <complete internet address>' [stuff deleted] What he didn't mention is that you can't use this system unless he's willing to give out his authcode. I use this system all the time and you get this when you call in: Which Host? telnet blah.blah.blah.edu Then some message like: Enter authorization code? (hehe..don't you wish?) Password? (yeah...) %TN00 - telnet (or somethin' like that) and so forth...you need an authcode..only way to get one is either to pay Merit for one, enroll at one of the State of Michigan's universities, or scam one somehow...I don't suggest two of them...I go to Michigan..but transferring to get telnet access is not the way to go..hehe The only time it doesn't ask you for an authcode is when you telnet within the state...if you use a TCP port, it'll ask you for an authcode too..even if it's not out of state. **************************************************************************** MMMMM MMMMM Antony Chen aka MELVIN @ University of Michigan, Ann Arbor MMMM MMMM GO BLUE!!
