Ordered Bellsouth ADSL 3 weeks ago. Install is scheduled for tomorrow. Just received a call today that they couldn't test my line because of an address conflict. I verified the address as correct. It is the same address they send my phone bills too. It is the same address they have come to on two separate occasions to fix line problems. Apparently the guy who is supposed to test the phone line can't read a map. I live in an apartment building and the street only exists within the complex and is about 300 meters long. It is on any Thomas bros. map printed within the last 5 years. Fed Ex and UPS make deliveries here all the time--I guess Fed Ex and UPS have higher intelligence/educational requirements for their drivers than Bellsouth has for their telecomunications technicians. I don't know if I want one of these dumbasses in my house now. The sad part is they have a big building on Strickland. From my porch, using a 7 iron, I can hit a golf ball and hit their building. What a bunch of idiots. Now I got bounced back another 3 weeks. After reading all the stuff on this group I knew something would go wrong. But I expected a more exotic excuse: Time Warner-trained squirrels eating wires, lightning strike, the-two-weeks-before-Y2K-bug bug, something... but an imaginary address conflict 100 meters from a major Bellsouth maintenance structure? The only reason I wanted Bellsouth is my company pays for my phone bill and internet and Telocity can't put it on my phone bill. So I will just have to send in two bills instead. A small price to pay to be free of their crappy service. Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.

Yeah, I'm very disappointed by this. I originally believed that Telocity was installing their own DSLAM's but apparently that's not happening, and functionally they are no different than Mindspring or Bellsouth.net except for service details like # of e-mail addresses, web space, newsgroup support, dial up time, etc. Randy S. cdronob@yahoo.com wrote: > Hate to have to tell you this, but telocity relies on bellsouth for > linetesting and routing thru their dslam equipment, then you have to > rely on telocity's personnel to get your order right and in my > experience thats not to likely, been trying to get their service since > early Nov.somebody keeps dropping the ball finally orered from bellsouth > installing tomorrow > > In article <83rf7o$7rs$1@nnrp1.deja.com>, > disgruntled bellsouth customer <rfc1122@my-deja.com> wrote: > > Ordered Bellsouth ADSL 3 weeks ago. Well, I sent a question to telocity. I asked about seeming contradictions in their FAQ. They say they assign a permanent IP when you place your order. They also say they use DHCP. Isn't that a contradiction? Anway their answer was nothing more than the url of the same FAQ. Not a good way to treat a potential customer. I guess I could say that my first impression is not very good. Carl in Raleigh disgruntled bellsouth customer wrote: > Ordered Bellsouth ADSL 3 weeks ago. Its not a contradiction at all. You are given a subnet of ip address with a /30, meaning that you have 2 useable addresses, one for the router, and one for your computer. Your computer gets its address from the router via DHCP, but its allways the same address, because there is only one in the DHCP pool to choose from. There FAQ isn't contradicting, it should just be a little more detailed. Carl Carl Lackey wrote: > Well, I sent a question to telocity. I asked about seeming contradictions > in their FAQ. Do we have 2 Carls here? When is a static IP dynamic? This seems like a
lot of rigamarol for a 'permaneant' IP. I am sure they have a reason.
Does it make it easier to reassign nameservers and such? Or?

No, Carl's right, it can, and often is, done that way. Seems strange, but when you get into setting up and administering a large subnet there are good reasons for doing things this way, not the least of which is that it means the customer doesn't have to set his IP number manually. Another way to get a DHCP server to assign a static IP is to associate a MAC address with a designated IP number. Then everytime the DHCP server sees that MAC address requesting an IP it will give it the same designated IP. Usually the point of doing this is to allow central administration. No need to go to actual premises to fix or update an IP address. Also, you are right, it allows any changes to nameservers and such to be updated centrally. Randy S. No, it's not a contradiction. Many places use this for ease of
administration. With DHCP, when your ethernet card sends a DHCP request
for an IP, the DHCP server 'leases' the IP address to your ethernet card.
If they set the length of the lease to inifinity (or an arbitrary really
high number), you never lose your lease, therefore everytime the DHCP
server gets a request with your MAC address, you will get the same IP.
Had they told you to setup a specific IP address, and for some reason down
the line had to change it, they would have to rely on you to make the
change. Here, all they have to do is change their DHCP server and all is
taken care of (except for any registrations that you may have, which are
your responsibility anyway).
All in all, it is an ease of use on their end, and for newbies that don't
know how to setup an IP since Windoze sets up by default for DHCP.
Hope this helps
