Calif Driver's License Question

Folks,
I heard a few years ago that if you're under 21 y.o., your picture on the
Calif DL will be on the right side and when you turn 21, they'll move the
picture to the left side. Is that still true? Cuz I just got mine yesterday
(yes, I'll be darn legal soon) and the picture still on the right side of
the card.

And now they have that fine print crap printed on it saying that this is
just a driver license, and not something that proof eligibility for health
care..blah blah blah.. Is it me or is that a new version?

What gives?

Everyone's picture is on the right side. The only thing that changes is
that you loose the statement saying when you're gonna turn 21.

that must be new. My guess is people are using that as proof of residency
or some other thing and the DMV just wants to state that "a license is
just a license"...

As Sue Irvin once said on 17 Jul 1995 13:52:59 GMT:
: I don't recall seeing any DLs with the picture on the wrong side

Well, now you do... I looked at a friend's DL and he's 29. His picture is on
the left.

: Good grief. Nothing like that on my state ID, but it's 3 years old.
: It must be new. Is it on the front or back?

It's in the front.
It's right before they print your name and it's bold green and you CAN'T
miss it. What the hell are they trying to do....activate 187? Sheesh!

My picture is on the left side. When the pic is on the right, it
means the person is under 21, while pic on the left means over 21.

I don't recall seeing any DLs with the picture on the wrong side
(I do cashiering now and then), but I do know that it will read,
in bold red print that the licensee is under 21 and the year he/she
turns 21.

My license, issued last August, has my picture on the left (I assume
because it's the over-21 edition).

Minor nit pick here... if the picture is on the right side, it just
means you were under 21 when you GOT the license. Don't mean anything
about NOW.

When you turn over 21, you don't necessarity get a new license. Since
it has your birthday on it, it sitll proves that your over 21.

There are two reasons for this, (I hear)

(1) it makes making fake ID's a bit harder.

(2) if your picture is on the left side, then people don't have to junt
aroudn for the birthday. Its easier to see that you're over 21.

My DL expired exactly on the day I turned 21. Maybe a coincidence?

Does'nt (or rather does) an expired driving license still work as
an adequate proof of age?

I haven't heard about that; lots of states have photos in profile for
under-21 licenses, so it's not unprecedented. I had a big red UNDER 21
UNTIL on mine before I was legal.

Yeah, I noticed that on my significant other's brand new driver license.
I suspect it's garden variety Prop 187 hysteria.

If your status is one listed, increase the number (tally)
by one. If not, as Ahmon, add it. Thanks, Lee.

what was I supposed to do?

yes its a coincedence. Mine expired when I was 20. Since i did not
have a clean record (1 point) I could not renew over mail. So I
had to go to the DMV to get a new one. That was whne I got the
new type of license (the plastic one instead of paper one)
