Bank Charge Bonanza!

I recently "went over" my overdraft "limit" by a few pounds and Natwest
pounced on me with a charge of £28. This seems unbelievable to me. An
overdraft limit should be just that but the banks pay a few pounds out
of your acount when their is insuffient funds and then charge you £28!

I asked the bank if they could make my overdraft limit more of a limit
to prevent to prevent this happening in the future because to charge
£28 it must have been a great inconvenience to the bank, and the reply
was if someone tries to charge my account and there is not enough cash
there the bank takes £38 from me for me not having enough money to pay
the original person.

I am currently choosing a new bank based on bank charges and am looking
long term for an alternative to these high street thieves.

You shouldnt have been surprised with all the publicity in newspapers and tv
programs about this issue.
There have ben countless reports also of people taking the banks to court
because these fees are illegal anyway.
Next year there will be a ruling to force banks to reduce penalties in the
same way credit card companies were forced to earlier this year from 25/30
down to 12.50 or so.
The bad news is that the banks as always will always have the last word and
find another way to get money from customers.
Changing banks wont help you as they all do the same.

NOT querying the substance of this posting, but alerting folk to the
fact that the thread was originally started in the following
newsgroups...

	uk.finance,nz.general,alt.uk.law,aus.consumers,can.consumers

... and that laws in the UK may differ from the laws in Australia which
may differ from the laws in NZ.

This happed to us on our joint account when a cheque issued months before
was presented unexpectedly causing an overdraft of a few pounds.

My partner (first named) wrote and complained.

No response.

We closed the account.

Because we (or rather I) had thought it had long been paid (to the passports

This can happen when direct debits are taken early as well and that
certainly happens.

I had some direct deits go early from my Nationwide Flex Account recently
taking me over my Limit (0) by about 10.
I got a letter a couple of days later telling me this had happened and that
as a result:
1. They had given me a new overdraft limit of 250
2. If I paid the current one off immediately I would not be charged fees
3. That I would be liable for the interest. (Which worked out at 5p)

Totally true. But the laws that allow them to be bastards do vary
around the place.

.
Maybe this is pertinent?
AIUI my bank will charge an OD amount on my chequing acct. to my
standing line of credit automatically without additional charge IF I
have previously made arrangements to do so. And of course my LOC has to
be 'in good standing'!
However I seem to have found that out almost by accident, the bank
never told me! And since I've luckily never been in OD the question had
previously never occurred to me, cos I have the time, now retired, to
'ride herd' on expenditures rather carefully.
But otherwise I might have to pay a fee (probably some $30+ Canadian!)
and/or high interest (like a cash advance) from the moment that the OD
occurs.
And I just checked that with 'My bank' and it doesn't reassure me! Any
OD would cost me 21% per annum. So it would still be up to me to take
control of moving funds from savings or LOC to defray the OD!
I've been with that bank btw since 1956. But don't expect any mercy;
thus loyalty goes out the window.

Complain to your bank - IME they will always reduce the charges. (My
bank has the same policy. If you go over your overdraft limit they
will charge you for each debit transaction (it is capped)).

However they will up the overdraft limit without question! Get
your bank to increase your limit to more than you can ever need.
