Problem with NAD 521i

Hi Everyone,

I have recently purchased a NAD 521i CD player, however there is one
particular CD I have which does not work in the NAD unit, but does in
all other units. I have taken the CD to the Hi Fi shop to try it out
on another unit (same model) and the problem was still there. We tried
it on other NAD models and other brands too (including my car cd
player and the CD player in my PC) and the CD works perfectly.

Has anyone else experienced this problem with the NAD 521i?

The CD is Phil Collins' Big Band album.

Regards,

Steven

Your NAD player obviously has better musical taste than the others....

Of course I knew this Problem (Nad 541 without i)
"NO disc"

The truth is, that NAD although it sounds IMO wonderful,
it is not reliable.
AS far as I knew, it is the 3. Generation whit his problems
(NAD 520/521/251i and 540/651/541i)
Dont try to get any answer from NAD.
AFAIK they never write back.
I got no answer, and, if you read www.audioreview.com
you will figure out, *nobody* got an answer.

(I solved the problem for myself to buy a second player
(Arcam DIVA 72, sounds different, but ist very reliable)

But I tried something, and sometimes it works.
When you take out the CD from the Box, it happens, that you
"deform" it by pulling it out like a "dish"

It tried to "deform" it in the other direction
(Hold it in the center ant pull other direction
(means: fom concav to convex)
Most times it will work.

I changed my NAD twice, but each unit had other problems.
I wonder , why no test-magazine writes about thoose problems ?
Or to be honest , I believe I knew why ;-)

with compliments from Vienna
Alfred

PS:
I knew, my english is not the best, in spite of this, I hope, you
understood, what I
mean, if I wrote "deform"
If my hint works, please let me know

I can't speak for other magazines, only for AudioEnz.

We had a 521 (before the "i" update) in for review some months back. My
reviewer found no such problem in the three weeks he had the player. I found
no such problem in the few days that I played with the 521.

So the reason that AudioEnz did not report this as a problem is because we
had no problem.

I hope to have a 541i in-house shortly. If I do get one, I'll keep an eye
out for disc problems with it.

It's weired - I've heard such conflicting things about all NAD products -
had me heart set on a 370 / 270 combo, but then I heard soooooo many poer
supply hum problems, that I bailed - since then, I've heard loads of reports
about how good / bad all NAD products are - seemingly due to them building
them in 2 locations - parrently one factory puts out quality gear, and the
other is shite. i can't say whether this is fact or not, but I've heard it
from quite a few sources now... seems a pity that a manufacturer that can
put out such really high quality gear can let standards slip like that...

**As a NAD service agent, I must say that I see very small numbers of their
equipment (a good sign). Build quality, in the latest stuff, looks pretty
good. Certainly, a cut above the mass market brands. Only Rotel is arguably
better, IMO. NAD did have a poor reputation for quality, in the mid 1980s,
but has steadily improved since then.

fair does, this is based mainly on taling to a mate who runs a hifi / tv /
cpmputer repair shop - he probably gets more older kit in. Ref. rotel, i
phoned what, at least is listed as their UK number, when the poer supply
went on an RB870bx amp, they said 75 quid, then told me to had aaway
inshite, when they actually listened to the model number (on the third
repeat). Fortunately, Jason at Sevenoaks Oxford sorted me out in 2 days at a
total cost of just 29 quid. so much for the rotel service dept... no cheers
for them, but, as I have always found since I first walked in, Oxford
Sevenoaks have sorted me with a very decent service, no matter what.. (I've
asked for their advice on Ebay items, they helped anyways ,even though they
knew, if anything, it would cost them a sale).. but the result? I'd never
dream of going anywhere else for cables, help, repairs, more stuff etc....
they really are the best guys I've ever dealt with...

I think, the answer is easy.
It depends of the point of view:
a)
You can see the NAD CD-Player as a "cheep" Product.
The sound quality is amazing near to analog, there is no other
player in this price range with a comparible "timbre".
I say "timbre", because there are of course other Players in a
comparible price-class whith comparible sound-quality, *but*
not with a comparible "timbre".
So, if you like the NAD Sound, you have to live with the other "features"

b) you can see the NAD as an "expensive" product.
Expensive, if you compare it with japanese consumer-market-products.
You get a simple looking (some say ugly, but I dont agree) unit, with
only the basic-features of a cd-player, "made in China" for three-times the
price of a cheep model made by a well known japanese producer and with
sometimes even more features.
People who see it from *this* point of view, expect a better sound-quality
*and* higher reliability than a "consumer-product" offers.

>

Easy to explain.
There are many people, who buy stereo eqipment, and have
30 or 50 cds in the racket.
They play 3-5 hours in a week, an if there is a little "skipping problem"
they dont care.

Here a quotation from an User-Review (www.audioreview.com)

"....now and then to replace it. Reasons? The skipping problem other owners
have
noted in their reviews--it's not chronic, but it does happen more often
than with any
other player I've used
"
But as you can see, *at the moment* he accept it......

Ich have more the 1100CDs in my classical collection, and I play about 20 or
more hours
in a week. So I want, that everyting works "perfect"

Build quality, in the latest stuff, looks pretty
> good.

If this is true, it is very sad.......

Hi Alfred,
if you have problems why not going to Audio Electronics.
He is very friendly guy and will certainly help if possible, even exchange the
player for newer charge if that helps.
And it is only around the corner in the Himberger Strasse 27 (im 10 Bezirk)
They exchanged my S500 two years ago because of skipping.

regards
Allain

Unfortunately for NAD, doing nothing to fix my amp when it repeatedly
went wrong in the late 80`s means that i will never buy anything from
them again - there are too many manufacturers producing better stuff
at better prices to make it worth the risk.

HI Allain

Thank you, for your letter.

But *at the moment* I have no problem.
My third player plays *almost* without skpping-problems, and from
my about 1100 CDs there are AFAIK only 4, which will not run with this
player,
or better said, they will run if you try it with several tricks.
Audio-electronics is very custumer-friendly, *but* of course they have to
live
with the player, how it is constructed, they cannon make it better, then
it is.
And from this point of view (reliability, skipping, error-correction) this
set,
or more exactly this generation of units (520/521/521i,540,541,541i)
IMO ist not even "Consumer-ware-Quality"
If you then write on NADs Home-page answering this:

"If you have a question or would like to drop NAD a longer
 personal note please email nad@NADelectronics.com."

 you get no answer.

OK
*But* if then somebody asks here: Ist the problem of my NAD-Player 521
all well-known problem ? Then I write : YES YES YES. It is well known.
Because there is no company in the world, which may ignore
a letter from me without any consequence................

compliments from Vienna
Alfred
