Any cis-Potomian meeting places in Northern Virginia?

A guy I've had some contact with, on usenet and email, but never in person, is going to be in DC for a while. I don't want to go into the District, nor (preferably) drive much farther in than the Beltway -- been there, done those, don't have to any more. What's a good place -- say, walking distance from the Orange Line -- to meet for a beer and get acquainted? -- RR 'Beartooth' Neuswanger karhunhammas (at) lserv.com On the Internet, you can never tell who is a dog (supposing you care) -- but you can tell who has a mind.

I don't remember the routes anymore but since transfers within the system are free you might suggest the Crystal City complex. There are a bunch of cheap places to get coffee or beer there. Also, most stops in Arlington County are close to cheap restaurants. Just meet at the information booth in just about any Arlington County stop. Have fun! > -- > RR 'Beartooth' Neuswanger > karhunhammas (at) lserv.com > On the Internet, you can never tell > who is a dog (supposing you care) -- > but you can tell who has a mind. >

In particular, the Clarendon stop has a lot of fairly good bars (for certain definitions of "good bars", of course) nearby; Whitlow's on Wilson, and a couple on Highland whose names escape me, are all pretty decent meet'n'greet locations. -- Sweth. -- Sweth Chandramouli ; <sweth+dining@gwu.edu>

Well, I might be willing to respond if you would be so kind as to define "Potomian." I couldn't find it in any of my dictionaries. Didn't know from the subject if you were referring to a body of water, a person, or some other venue ;-). For example: He: "What do you want to do about dinner tonight?" She: "Let's go to that new restaurant that just opened in Clarendon. I hear they have great Potomian cuisine." He: "Are you sure? I heard from a guy at work that the place also features scantily clad Potomian dancers that perform right in front of your table!" She: "Well at MY office they said it was a group of five Potomian strolling accordian players that play "Lara's Theme" right at your table! He: "Sounds fine with me. I'll make a reservation." By analogy with cisAlpine and transAlpine -- this side of vs. beyond the Alps -- you might at first (briefly) get cisPotomackian or cisPotomacan. But those look and sound insufferably awkward. My stab at what it will quickly wear down to, if it ever gets any real use -- as I, obviously, think imnsho it should -- is cisPotomian. (On further consideration, cisPotoman might be better.) Just the way languages work -- especially if you happen to be a historian of tongues, even an amateur one. <grin> Gawdknows the biggest river we've got ain't no mountain range; but, like the Beltway, it marks a major divide. All kinds of things depend on which side you're on.

All kinds of things depend on which side you're on. Fewer syllables are better, so I propose "cisPot/transPot" (for the Potomac), "cisLoop/transLoop" (for the Beltway), "cisPons/transPons" (for the Wilson Bridge), and "cisAnd/transAnd" (from the Latin for "aisle" (andron), for people in the same/different political party as you). obdc.dining: inspired by all of the Pho talk, I decided to go to Pho for lunch. We'll see if I'm still up for it for dinner tonight as well. -- Sweth. -- Sweth Chandramouli ; <sweth+dining@gwu.edu>

All great! -- though I doubt the last will catch on. (Would you make transPilatan, or transBrutan or something -- maybe with latin for 'coat' -- for Jeffords et hoc genus omne? ) > obdc.dining: inspired by all of the Pho talk, I decided to >go to Pho for lunch. I *thought* I just coined it. Ummm, OK, maybe it will eventually make it in Webster's but perhaps not the OED. Someone's (usually the Feds and marketing types) always trying to coin something in this town - usually making verb forms out of nouns. There was a rumor years ago that the folks in the Pentagon had to have a special dictionary to look up terms contrived by Alexander Haig and we're not just talking acronyms here. To the proponents, it's a more efficient way of communicating; to the opponents it's obfuscation. Enough of linguistics, it's time to get back to the linguine. I would suggest Gaffney's (Fairfax Dr.), Carpool (also Fairfax Dr.), or Rock Bottom Brewery (Ballston Common Mall) - all walking distance from the Ballston Orange Line stop in Arlington.
