As far as the Pashtun ethnic areas are concerned, the Taliban are more or less representative of their interests and culture, and many of its leading members were chosen according to Pashtu tribal democratic traditions (a rough, tribal democracy that likely existed well before that of the ancient Athenians). It's one thing to send NATO peacekeepers to Kabul where much of the population is non-Pashtun. It's rather stupid and futile to send an aggressive war-making force to the Pashtun heartland, in order to impose a puppet regime. It just won't work. If you really want the oil and gas pipeline *that* badly (from which Canada won't even benefit), you'd be better off trying to build it through the north and north-east of the country (and no guarantee of success there either), and stay the hell away from Pashtu territory. There is absolutely no way the Pashtu clans and tribes are going to allow that to be built on their territory, nor will they allow foreign rules or a foreigner's puppet to be imposed there. It seems however that Harper and the ignoramuses in charge of the troops want to learn this the hard way.
