I submitted the following problem to Adobe and it is not yet solved, so I'm looking for users who experienced the same issue with hypenation.

Thanks!

---

The problem :

Since our migration from FrameMaker 7.2 to FrameMaker 8 we have problems with automatic hyphenation not working as it is supposed to.
We are using FrameMaker 8.0p277 on PC (Windows XP SP3).

On Adobe support FTP in the folder "Case #0180382132" I have uploaded various files. A screen capture of our hyphenation settings.
One FrameMaker file with the hyphenation problem. One PDF file of page 15 which has the problem: near "2.2 [Bureau de division]"
the word "prsente" is splitted as "prsen-te" according to the settings it shouldn't. And finally page 42 which has the
problem: near "(4) [Les dettes sont tenues pour dettes de lactif]" the word "reu" is splitted as "re-u" and it shouldn't be
splitted at all. The text is in French.

We had the same issue with another FrameMaker 8 document. We were using the PostScript font Melior. The tested your solution by
swapping the font to an Open Type version of Melior and the problem remains.

I have uploaded (in the folder 2009-09-19) both versions of the font with the FrameMaker 8 document. One example of the problem is
nearby "14. On comptait, au 31 mars 2007" on page 5 where "ralit" is truncated "rali-t".

Changing the font is not a solution.
Why would the hyphenating be correct in FrameMaker 7.2, because there is no Unicode support?
There is no localization information related with a font?

---

My Windows XP language settings

Standards and Formats : "French (Canada)"
Location: "Canada"
Keyboard: French (Canada) - Canadian French
Language for non-Unicode programs: Canadian French

---

The answer from Adobe Support:

I was able to upload the open type font of Melior LT and confirmed that using
both the French-Canadian dictionary and French Dictionary; it seems this
font adds an unneeded hyphen.

I will let our Developers know of the issue with this font. Thank you
for brining it to our attention.

Gabe, unfortunately we don't have access to any of the files you send to Adobe, so we might not understand the exact problem description.

Have you edited your dictionaries to specify hyphenation points of the specific words?

If you want a particular word not to hyphenate in one particular instance, placing a discretionary hyphen at the front of the word will disallow hyphenation in that particular instance of the word.

Another possibility is that the Word spacing settings in the paragraph tag may need to be adjusted. In a default FM chapter the settings are Min 90%, optimum 100%, Max 110%. These settings often need to be adjusted depending on the font used, the type of content, and the line measure in order to get the best results with hyphenation.

I work also with French documents, and the hyphenation was a bit buggy with early builds of FM8. Make sure you have the latest updates.

Also (as Sheila says) we cant see your examples; but I have noticed that minimum before/minimum after rules seem to count punctuation marks as letters, so prsen-te). with parenthesis and full-point following the -te is counted as four characters after the hyphen.

Hi, thank you for your answers.

I have the latest FrameMaker version 8.0p277.

Here is a .zip archive with a sample FM8 file, a screen capture of the hyphenation settings along with a bug sample : <http://www.interscript.ca/adobe_support/0180382132.zip>

Thanks!

I've taken a look at your example files and I see the problem you've indicated.

As a general observation (and applying to English text, not French), I've always preferred using a minimum word spacing of 85% and optimum at 100%, because it's always seemed to me that a slightly larger "spread" between the two numbers (min vs. max) produces better hyphenation results -- regardless of the FM version or the fonts.

Are you trying to match previously published documents?

It's odd, isn't it?

I tried changing the shortest suffix to 4.

In the case of ncessai-re, it rehyphenates nces-saire. In the case of rali-t, it doesnt rehyphenate.

I can't offer any explanation; only confirm that I have had similar experiences, but have generally got around the problem by introducing an optional hyphen manually in the place where I want the word to divide. Which can be tedious. Thats using French, as opposed to Canadian French.

I agree with Sheila that there cant be any linguistic information in the font.
