Hello, The auto update through Reader failed during the install preventing 7.08 from completing. I am using Windows XP Home, fully updated, SP2. Athlon 2800 with 1gb [or there about] memory. I used CCleaner to clean temp files, rebooted and tried again. No luck via the Reader program update interface. I tried going to Reader>Help>detect and repair.....but I can only see an installer window flash onto the desktop for milliseconds. I cannot uninstall via +/- programs and get the error message "the installation source is not available, please verify that it exists and that you can access it". Not sure what this means and cannot seem to Google or search and locate any help/similar issues. If I manually download Reader 7.08 and attempt to install I get the message "installing 7.08...status removing applications etc", then an error window which says "error 1714, the older version of 7.08 cannot be remove, contact your technical support group" I can stiill open pdf files with Reader despite the above. How do I go about the exact method to completely remove Adobe Reader 7.07, clean it from the registery for a successfull full reinstall of 7.08 - or your suggestions greatfully accepted. Thanks for your time in this issue, I really value it.

I had this problem, too. Very frustrating! I was finally able to fix mine by downloading and running the Windows Install Clean Up Utility. I found the directions on the tech support page when I typed in error 1714 in search. Sorry, I don't know how to give you a link to it. I tried solutions 1, 2, and 3 with no luck. I resisted this option at first because the directions made it sound really scary to run it, but I did it with no problems. You just have to be sure you don't select any programs except the ones that say Adobe reader. After running the clean up utility I was able to download a new version of adobe reader.

I had the same problem and solved it by using the Windows Install Clean Up Utility (like Kay Haugan). Unfortunately after that the Microsoft Office Update didn't work! Strange!

I cannot upgrade from 7.0.5 to 7.0.8. I receive error 1612, missing source material. A search through the tech support has no results for either the text no the 1612. Is this the same as the 1714 error others have encountered and where are the tech support directions for installation?

Thanks Kay! I already had the Windows Cleanup Utility [msicuu2.exe] downloaded on my computer for use on a number of unrelated MS issues I had years ago. You can read about the purpose of the Utility here: <http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;290301> Running the Utliity certainly removed the Reader from the list in Utility. However, I found I could still use Reader 7.07 and open pdf files with 7.07. I then rebooted and ran CCleaner, both clean and issues [http://www.ccleaner.com]and rebooted. I then tried installing a fresh downloaded copy of AdbeRdr708_en_US.exe and the install went without issue. Adobe 7.08 is now fully installed on my computer without issue, and works with all functions just fine. Seemingly the problem is fully resolved. BIG UP and many thanks to the computer community forum spirit for assisting in the successful resolution on this issue. Thanks to Adobe for providing this forum - but equally SHAME ON YOU for your inability to provide your resolution in the FAQ or Help areas for your software. I will continually keep my eye out for software that can equal your product and that provides better tech support.

Thank G-d I'm NOT alone on this one! Have the same issue, and am caught in classic catch22..can't uninstall, can't install! Tried to install ver6, then uninstall, but that didn't help at all. Running P4 laptop with XP Pro. Everything worked OK before 7.08 (attempted) update....
