I have a computer which starts up to the point of Verifying DMI pool data and then hangs. How can I fix the problem? Thanks Andy K

Dear Andy, Try disabling your internal cache in the BIOS. I have seen this problem several times before usually with cheap motherboards. I would say its your motherboard (possibly Ram). If you need further help feel free to call Davmar Computer Support, a free telephone support service 24 Hours / 7 Days on 02 9723 5350 or davmaronline@ozemail.com.au Regards, Martin Feigh Davmar Computer Support 02 9723 5350 -- Subscribe to FUSiONzine, Australia's fastest growing Electronic Magazine. What is the spec of the machine? It would be helpful to post more info to assist anyone in replying Andy. I have had exactly the same problem, but mine seemed to be down to Mcafee anti-virus software which was causing it to hang. Removed the reference to it in autoexec.bat and it was all OK. -- Jon, South East UK ~Remove SPAMTRAP for email replies~ http://www.local.clara.net

You might have to go to the BIOS and clean out the assigned settings in the PnP/PCI setup... I got this problem when I swapped a couple of cards in different slots.... regards mrdata ======== :^) Andy K wrote: > I have a computer which starts up to the point of Verifying DMI pool data > and then hangs. How can I fix the problem? Almost certainly nothing to do with DMI Pool Data (aka NVRAM), though resetting BIOS PnP would prolly fix it if it was. This is typically the very last message displayed by the BIOS, so anything that causes a lockup in the earliest phase of disk boot would do this, including: 1) Bad boot sector or disk 2) Misconfigured or really bad RAM 3) Overly-aggressive CMOS chipset settings Classic case is where a UMC chipset 486DXn mobo is using EDO RAM, and loses the CMOS contents (possible giveaway; autodetects all IDE devices on startup) including the setting to enable EDO support. Without EDO support enabled, such systems do exactly this.

Try to disable the external cache in BIOS setting.

Don't rush to this. BIOS updates are (at least in my experience) seldom necessary, and I can't see any situation where a BIOS that used to work, ceases to do so, unless hardware is added or the BIOS gets corrupted (e.g. CIH virus). Rest of stuff snipped as irrelevant; if he never sees "Starting Windows 9x..." message, IO.SYS is not loading successfully and neither will anything after that. >> I have a computer which starts up to the point of Verifying DMI pool data >> and then hangs. How can I fix the problem?
