Which computer backpack?

Any recommendations? Experiences? Etc.?

It's for my son who has a Dell Inspiron. Can't remember whether it's a 12
or 13" screen. Weighs about 6+ lbs.

He now has the regular carrying case. A backpack would be much
preferable.

Thanks.

I've got a Targus backpack for my big fat I7000. About 2 years old, no
problems, no signs of wear. Has seen many airports , overhead bins, and I'm
not particularly careful about setting it on the ground. Plus with cables,
etc, the damn bag probably weighs 30 lbs. so it handles a full load pretty
well.

I love my backpack - I got it from EBags, and it has gel padded straps
and similar back protection on it which make it REALLY comfy. It's from
Eastpak. It is perfect for a student - 3 compartments (1 BIG, 1 almost as
big, and one for small stuff with a special padded Discman/Walkman pocket in
it), and about 20 pockets inside and out, plus hooks & straps. Never had a
prob, and it has a lifetime wear & tear guarantee. Only about $60, too.

I recently changed to a backpack after the carry case was hurting my
shoulder quite a bit.

I've got an STM Sports Backpack
(http://www.standardtm.com.au/original_sports.html). Not sure of their
availability outside Australia but they have an adjustable, padded section
that holds the laptop and space for other items. The bag is extremely
comfortable and with the load of the laptop (7lbs) it is barely noticable.

Has a lifetime warranty, I've had it for a few months now and even though I
take it everywhere including on planes, etc. it still looks like new.

About AUD$130 (US$65) so it certainly doesn't break the bank.

I use a swiss army ascent trek bag. Nobody could tell that there was a notebook in it. Hell, even
swiss army doesn't say that it is for laptops, but there is an inner sleave specifically designed
for a notebook.

FWIW after a lot of hunting an seeing very little that didn't look like a
laptop bag turned on its side, I've ended up with a padded sleeve from
sfbags.com (whose construction, customer service and delivery is superb I
might add) and a Kelty boomerang backpack which has a (not very padded)
compartment that is just the right size for the laptop in its sleeve.
You might also want to take a look at North Face who make a couple of latop
versions of their bags (the 'mainframe' and the 'network' if memory serves)
(ebags.com), the Spire 'zoom' (spireusa.com) or the Osprey helios (if you're
after a serious backpack...) (ospreypacks.com)

Saw an episode of Oprah this week with some cop talking about how simple it
is for laptops to be taken from backpacks. I think he advised against them
but he did say, if you must use them, to make sure that you have a lockable
flap which fits over a lockable zipper - in other words, make it difficult
for a would-be thief by making them have to attempt a two hand theft rather
than a single handed grab and run.

Yes, notebooks are easily stolen from backpacks that are not designed to hold them or if you are
stupid enough to leave your bag open too long to expose its contents. Usually, notebook backpacks
will have a sleave that fits the notebook securely and this makes it more difficult for a 'one hand
job'. Most notebook thieves know about Targus backpacks and will look for that name when seeking
out a target. Stealth is the best defense. If the notebook pack doesn't look like a notebook
backpack, and doesn't say Targus on it, there is a reduced risk of theft. I know of a few people
that have had their Targus branded packs and briefcases stolen but have been safe so far using
notebook bags that look like normal book sacs. I'd say that backpacks are much less obvious than
those hand carried computer briefcases.

Can a laptop case or backpack be carried onboard an airplane in addition to
a carry-on piece of luggage?
Thanks, Anne

That varies by airline - in 9/11, some of them limit the bags to
one.

Every airline I have flown since then has allowed one carry on bag and one
'personal bag' (purse, laptop, briefcase).

Does it have room for books and binders too along w/ a notebook? You mentioned
two large compartments... That would be ideal for me...
