Bad Cable Modem/AC Adapter?

Here's the problem: I have my originally issued (12/99 - @home) RCA DCM105 cable modem. It's been working like a champ until today. Twice in the last few hours, all the lights go out, including the power light. Pushing the on-off button does nothing. The only thing that will get it back on is to remove power at the ac adapter plug and replug, or unplug the ac adapter from the wall and replug it. I don't have to wait any period of time. I have noticed that the adapter is very warm, warmer than most ac adapters that I have, but I don't know how warm it normally is, since it's always on the floor. It's rated output is 16VDC, 1000mA. I will try another generic variable adapter, if I can find one, but that may be hard. Has anyone experienced this type of modem behavior? ATTBI is scheduled to come out on next Wednesday, and I suspect they will replace the modem, IF it is not working when they come. I am tempted to buy my own modem, but with the Comcast soon taking over, I'd hate to have one that they don't recommend. If you're in the SFBay Area, do you know what modem is standard issue these days? Thanks, Bruce Karnacki

Wow, that is exactly what happened to mine about 2 days ago. Although the rca dcm105 has never really performed flawlessly for me, this is the first time it's behaved this way. Anyway, the AC adapter doesn't seem any warmer than the others on my strip. You might want to check on the pricing structure for subscribers who purchase their own modems. I seem to remember one of the big ISPs recently cutting out most of the benefits of owning modems. I don't remember if it was ATT, Comcast, or another... I'd be interested to know how the new modem works. I've had nothing but trouble with ATTbi support and dread the thought of having to make another call or use their online chat feature. The latter usually results in them writing to me saying i should power cycle the modem and type back the results :) oh, I'm in the bay area as well. Sorry I'm not more helpful. Your are the third person that replied saying that they exeperienced the same 'phenomenon' during the same time window. Two others responed to me privately. One is in San Mateo, one is in Belmont. I'm in San Carlos. Based on these replies, I'm up in the air as to whether or not to let attbi change out the modem on Wednesday. I hate to have them change anything. If they do, it could be days before I'm back up, or it could be minutes. Never know. One other thing that happened to me last night is that all of my family's AOL Instant Messenger connections went down. We all have the IM message "Connection Lost". When we try to connect, it hangs for a while and then says can't connect. I can, however connect with these screen names on non-attbi machines. I believe IM uses port 5190. Could attbi be blocking that? I scheduled a service call over the weekend, but got a voice mail this
morning saying that there was a network outage in the area (San
Mateo/Foster City) and they cancelled my service call.
I never thought I'd here that from att ;).
Now my modem is doing other strange things like losing connection, but
the lights remain on and the power button doesn't work. Previously, I
would just renew my dhcp lease ("dhcpcd -n" over and over until i got a
valid lease), but now it just times out -- according to the firewall logs.
Maybe they finally realized
that their dhcp server is dodgy. Makes me long for the days of @home and
the legit static IP.
It looks like ATTbi is blocking all ports. SSH used to work for me --
called a friend, had him try to connect, no dice. Then I moved it to
some obscure high ports, but met no success. Now I'm seriously pissed!

Had the same problem with @home. DHCP server was out for 5 days straight.
Glad I had all the numbers and was able to run static.

Will a buggy dhcp server cause the modem's power to go out?
I received yet another note from a Foster City user with a RCA DCM105 that
experienced similar problems.
BTW, I've had same ip since long before this problem as I do right now.
Everything has been fine here since Saturday am. The IM problem that I
mentioned below cleared up this afternoon.

I would doubt the dhcp server is causing these power issues, but I'm not a big fan of coincidence either. Something about all these DCM105 failures, all in the same area and at about the same time, worries me. Speaking of coicidence -- I too had the same IP address for a long time... until July 1. Then it changed to .103. Interestingly, This address scanned me several times on June 25. Not really sure what that means, but it definitely got me thinking. Probably just paranoid. As far as blocking ports? I chatted with a ATT helpdesk person last night. He told me that ATT was not blocking any ports -- which doesn't really explain my inability to connect to port 22 from outside. Not that it matters, since I can't keep the modem on for more that 45 minutes. Maybe the IP change or the patching binge I went on last week contributed to this though -- I haven't looked at my FW rules in a while. Probably not the right group for this, but if anyone has any troubleshooting tips, I'd be glad to know. Thanks, Marc > On Mon, 15 Jul 2002 21:04:14 -0700, Bruce G. For whatever it's worth, I have exactly the same problem and so does a friend of mine (RCA dcm105 modems, both located in San Mateo area). I haven't called ATT yet hoping the problem would just go away. I keep power-cycling the modem a few times a day in the meantime. To me it sounds like ATT pushed a buggy software upgrade onto the modems a few days ago. I'd rather not have them come to the house and change things if I can avoid it. Well, you may be right. I just got home and my modem is off again. It had been fine since Saturday morning. I thought the problem was over; guess not. ATT called this morning to verify that they were coming out tomorrow (Tuesday) between 8 - 10 am to check things out. I almost cancelled the truck roll, but now I'll keep it, even though I hate the thought of changing anything. Perhaps they did implement new s/w, and perhaps it's not affecting newer modems. Well, att came out this morning as scheduled. Very nice and capable fellow took one look at the RCA DCM105 and said it's time for a new one. He said they automatically replace these old ones when they come out, no questions asked. He also remarked that since the @home changeover they have been seeing more and more problems with them (105s). I didn't ask for details. I left my whole network connected, router, hub, and multiple pcs. I sort of expected him to ask me to connect the pc directly to the modem, but he didn't even mention it. We tuned my TV to channel 79 to see the video camera that's aimed at the signal strength scope back at the head end. It was fine. He plugged in an RCA DCM245. The registration procedure went exactly like that posted by att on dlsreports.com. ATT had my MAC, my account was in good standing, we hit 'reset modem', got a Modem 2 window, and entered account numbers. The system responded by registering my new modem's MAC. That was it. Fifteen minutes max. I can tell from here (work) that it is still up. Time will tell if the 'power' off problem was due to increasing incompatibility of the att system with the older DCM105. (The only 'yeah, I've got the same problem' replies came from DCM105 users.) I skimmed the instruction book on the modem. It says it's "capable of receiving data at speeds of up to 3000 kbps (3 Megabits per second)". Hmmm...seems low. I asked about Comcast. He said he was told there would be no email name change, and no price increase. Everything would be transparent to the customer. He also said fiber would be installed withing the next two years. Take it for what it's worth. Bruce Karnacki "Bruce G. Karnacki" <karnacki@invalid.com> wrote in message news:sW3Z8.544022$352.93453@sccrnsc02... > Well, you may be right.
