I've been customer of @home for about 3 years now, with all the ups
and downs of the service.

During the last few weeks I started to have an annoying problems that
now are becoming dramatic.

The Internet stops to work, for hours. However my IP stack is OK, my
modem is OK.
I can ping ALL the addresses in my area including the DNS server, the
Gateway and the News server.

I can download news at full speed and I can upload, no problem. I can
also visit web sites that are in my area. We have static IP here, so a
lot of people set up their site.

I can't access anything else outside of Fremont where I live. I can't
go to check my email, since the server isn't here, I can't do ICQ or
anything like that. Look like I'm into an intranet that is down on the
outside but still work inside.

The problem got worse and worse till this weekend. From yesterday
morning till now I was capable to navigate only from 11pm yesterday
till 11am this morning. Now I'm writing this message and everything is
down but as I said, I can still use the Usenet since the server is in
my area.

I called @home 4 times. Totally I spent 5 hours on the phone. They
don't know what they are talking about. I'm telling them "my IP stack
is OK and I download from the Usenet as we talk" and they say to me
"may be you have an IRQ conflict" !!!!!

Last one, was a "second level" support. He told me to switch
permanently to dynamic IP so he can debug me.
I told him to go to hell!
How can he debug me if he adds another complication?
Beside I don't want to switch to a dynamic IP.

Has any other in the area or in a different area having the same
problems? I bet you that monday morning everything will work fine...

Thank You for your answers! I hope I can understand what is this. I
thing is their gateway/router though.

Regards
Gabriele

keep calling and calling, get tickets bug the hell out of them.
I had 35 calls and 15 tickets in 6 weeks before I got a level 3 tech.
Now my problems are just about gone.
I know it's a pain in the ass but you got to bug them.
Try not to get ignorant with them and I know that will be difficult to do.
If you can get a level 3 tech he/she will call the field manager and get you
some action.
I had no invasive debug either, that sounds fishy to me.

I Live pretty close to Fremont, in San Leandro, and I don't have any of the
problems you are talking about. I kind of had that problem when I was
experimenting on the best DNS domain. How about you try to change it, maybe
"haywd2.sfba.home.com" or frmt2.sfba.home.com" or frmt1.sfba.home.com. I
change my DNS domain every couple of weeks just to see which is faster,
since I kind of live in between Hayward and Fremont, and sometimes one or
the other doesn't work. Go ahead and try this, if u need some help or info
on the Network settings, e-mail me.

Sunday all day was a miserable connection. @home was down
constantly ( i live in L.A.) They claim not have any known
outages. Sunday night was just as bad and so far monday isn't
any better.

all day monday i had the worst wait times on the phone ever with
them. forty-five mins. I was probably on the phone five hours
as well, to little avail -- just a few "promised" supervisor
calls

I just wanted to let you know you weren't alone and invite
others with @home problems to tell us what they were, especially
sunday and monday. is it our computers or does @home stink?

"for 3 years" -- I didn't know @home has existed for that long! I'm
in San Ramon and connected in January 2000.

Did you have your modem upgraded lately? When mine was upgraded, the
tech told me that @home was switching over to dynamic IP addressing.
My IP addresses lating have been in a completely different sub-net
from the one I stated with in Jan. The 2nd level tech that asked you
to switch to dynamic IP may be correct. If someone else is using the
address that you have configured, it may explain some of your problems.
It may explain why you can't get out of your local area. Since you
may be coming in through a new sub-net (with a bad IP address for that
sub-net), when requests leave that sub-net, the replies cannot find
there way back to you since they are being routed to the sub-net
containing your IP address (which is not your sub-net).

The tech that said "IRQ conflict" demonstrates that lack of technical
ability most of @home's support people have (or don't have). Any
problem that cannot be solved beyond cycling the modem and PC is
beyond their ability.

Give dynamic IP a try and see if it solves your problem. You can
always change back. BTW, if you want to keep the static IP address
because you have set up a web site, that is against @home's accepted
use policy (maybe it wasn't 3 years ago).

Good luck.

I have had @home installed for two weeks. Today Friday July 21 it went down
for several hours. And now it is back however when I ping www, news or mail
I see that I am now connected through WA (Washington state) I was connected
through Oregon. So now my mail is not working I guess because the address
is not what they set me up for. I have tried to change it to the ping
returned server name but it will not work. The www and news servers seem to
work OK. Mail needs my user name and password. Looks like they didn't take
the time to switch this over while Oregon networks are down. Email cant be
relied upon with @home keep hotmail or bigfoot mail accounts so you will get
mail when @home goes down!!

Fremont was the test area of the @home service for the entire
country. I think it has been in Fremont for more than 3 years!
