I was recently looking at the Bell Atlantic website and noticed
that "Voice Dialing" was included in the BIG DEAL package that
is offered by Bell Atlantic. Here is what the site advertises
for Maryland customers:
----------------------->
Big Deal Services
Big Deal services include: Caller ID with name
(required), Three Way Calling, Call Forwarding, Ultra
Forward , Call Waiting, Speed Dialing, *69, Repeat
Dialing, Distinctive Ring, Voice DialingSM, Fixed Call
Forwarding, Call Block, and Intercom Extra.
Pricing and Ordering:
Big Deal is $17.99 per month.
------------------------------>
You can view the site yourself at:
http://www.bellatlantic.com/foryourhome/MD/Products/BDX-01/index.html
So I decided to call my Bell Atlantic business office and have
the Voice Dialing service added to my line -- since I was
obviously (already) paying for it. The customer service rep
then told me the Voice Dialing is $3.75 a month and NOT included
in the Big Deal package. So I called *another* Bell Atlantic
rep and was told the same thing -- NO FREE VOICE DIALING! But
this supervisor had her manager view the site and promised to have
it corrected. I also sent the customer service email a message
and told them about the mistake.
Their address is: mailto:md-dc-de.asc@verizon.com
I then received the following reply:
Dear Sir:
Thanks for your e-mail inquiry and please accept our sincere
apology for the website error. It is our policy to provide
customer service that is head and shoulders above our
contemporaries. Thanks for the feedback.
C. Pinnix
MD-DC ASC (7/27/00)
==========================
So, is that it? Does Bell Atlantic plan on correcting the error?
It's now 7-31-00 and the mistake has NOT been corrected. I
wonder if this is a "gross mistake" or simply a way to attract
customers to call customer service to sell the Voice Dialing
for an additional $3.75 per month?
Maybe you should write them at: mailto:md-dc-de.asc@verizon.com
and ask if they plan on correcting their mistake? I'd like to know
what they have to say. BTW, Bell Atlantic is now VERIZON.
Life used to be so simple.....

I suggest you send email, and a printed letter, to the consumer affairs department at the FCC and to the appropriate agency in the Maryland office of the Attorney General to inform them of this blatant false advertising. You might also want to copy that letter to the Federal Trade Commission.

Well, they don't offer Voice Dialing included, as the website insists,
so there is nothing truthful about it, right?
You are welcome to view it at:

Bell Atlantic may be spread out over a good portion of the north to mid Atlantic seaboard, but most if not all of it's local telephone servoces are governed by a local state public utility commission. In reference to the comments made by the original poster, I do not see where there is false advertising being presented. Unless you know something that you did not expand on in your posted message? Note the disclaimer at the bottom: 'some big deal services may not be available in all areas'. I think you'd do better with hot coffee from Mcdonalds.....

You are missing the point. The web page is quite specific about the feature being included in the package. It's not about it being unavailable in some areas, it's about it not being part of the package at all. -- http://www.fnet.net/~ellis/photo/

Considering Bill Clinton's testimony at his own trial, one could literally interpret some services in all areas to be no voice dialing in all areas as some service not available in all areas, or it could be more loosely interpreted to mean that some services are not available in some areas, which is probably what is implied by the disclaimer. Nothing in this world is specific. Everything is negotiable, if you have leverage. I didn't miss the fact that the original poster said that the verbiage included said service, all I was merely stating was that there was a disclaimer that could be used to cover this if Bell Atlantic chose to invoke it. I think it IS specific when the two customer service reps
specifically told me the web site is in ERROR.
BTW, beginning today (8-1-00) Bell Atlantic is now VERIZON.
What's next?
