I'm in desperate need of help. My printer, Apple LaserWriter Select 360, quit working in OS/2 but not win-os/2 sessions. I cannot print from any OS/2 application, but I can print from Word 6, using the OS/2 or windows drivers, with no problems. Here's what's happened in the last few weeks. I was using the drivers that came with connect up until a couple weeks ago. The I installed the newest drivers I could find. Everything seemed to work fine. I then created a network (HP 4P plus) printer object using a template, installed the required drivers (Laserjet.drv) and everything seemed to work ok. Printing to either printer worked fine from OS/2 or win-os/2 sessions. I'm also using Faxworks so the FXprint driver was also installed. Then one fine day Describe refused to print to my Laserwriter, although I could print to the network printer. IBM works printed ok to the Laserwriter as did windows apps. I tried reinstalling old driver from the setting notebook and via selective install. Neither worked, in fact I can no longer print from IBM Works or any other OS/2 app. Printing from Win-os/2 seesions still works fine. I deleted all other printer drivers so that I now have only the Pscript.drv that came with connect installed. Printing in win-os/2 sessions is unaffected, using the OS/2 driver or the windows drivers. I can print from my laptop, OS/2 or win-os/2 sessions. What happens when I try to print? The little green light on the printer starts flashing, then one page is printed that contains a % in the upper left corner of the page. After 2 minutes a box pops up that says... Printer off-line, out of paper, or paper jammed(?)...with the three Abort, retry or ignore buttons. Abort aborts the process, Retry produces the same response and Ignore causes an additional sheet of paper to be printed, containing an ! or sometimes !PS Adobe to be printed in the upper left corner of the page. I've tried everything I can think of, which is probably why I can't solve the problem. I've never had this happen before. Using just the network printer ins't an option, I must use the LaserWriter. My only option at this point are to reinstall OS/2. Please help, I'm desperate. Michael Smar College of Pharmacy South Dakota State University pc00@sdsumus.sdstate.edu

The result of that was that, while everything was fine in Win-OS/2, things did not work right in OS/2, but I didn't suspect the printer itself. Does your printer have any self-tests? When I finally got around to trying those, I realized that it was the printer, not OS/2, that was at fault. -- Bill Pridgen San Antonio pridgen@texas.net
It's the irq stupid (was Help! Printer Problem in OS/2)

IBM works printed ok to the Laserwriter as did windows apps. Oops! Stopped by the Warp Pharmacy today. As I was reading the solution to my problem it occurred to me what I did to create it. When I installed my network card there was a conflict with my sound card. I disabled the sound card at the time because I didn't have time to fix the problem. I finally had time a few weeks ago. I changed the irq on the sound card (from the default 5) to 11 because I didn't think it conflicted with anything else. Lpt1 is supposed to be 7. Apparently 11 wasn't the right number because of the problems I had with the printer. When I removed /irq from the config.sys the printer worked properly (according to the Warp Pharmacy /irq sets the interrupt to 7, that's why I chose 11 for my sound card). Does anyone know how would the irqfor lpt1 could be set to 11 instead of 7? I don't know why an irq conflict didn't occur to me. Thank god for the Warp Pharmacy. Now I can try Star Office, go back to Describe, and say goodbye (and good riddance) to Word. Michael Smar College of Pharmacy South Dakota State University pc00@sdsumus.sdstate.edu
